lower cylinder base gasket
I have a coolant leak and as near as I can tell it is coming from the lower gasket on the rear cylinder.
Just how expensive is this to fix?

You will need all of the parts for a top end rebuild IF it is the base gasket.
I've never seen a base gasket leak coolant. Keep looking I'll bet it's coming froming something else. MT

I don't think its possible for coolant to leak from the lower base gasket as the fluid only circulates around the cylinder head. It may be leaking from one of the hoses, you will have to remove the tank to get at them.

ONLY the top 1/3 of the cylinder and the heads are liquid cooled. Attached to the bottom of each jug is a coolant pipe that utilizes an o-ring, that could be the culprit.
On the 1700's one way a base gasket could leak is if that cylinder has a porous casting. I have seen a few of these, specifically on older skoots where oil seeped right out of the aluminum due to porosity in the casting, allow oil from inside the engine to find it's way thru the porosity. Fluid leaks can travel from there source, clean off the engine and crank it up. Look for the first sign of leakage. RACNRAY
