APC air mod

I've gotten several questions about my air filter mod. I give full credit to the link on Gadget's site: "Home Made Open Air Intake For $20? Yep. (Thomas J. Daluisio)" The author made his own backing plate. Lacking confidence in my metalworking skills, I had to add the cost of Chuckster's 7" plate to that $20.

The filter is an APC 2 3/4" Tight Fit Replacement Filter Chrome Top--blue. They also come in red and white.

Chuckster can tap metric for the center rod, but I chose SAE because the all-thread is a lot cheaper at the local hardware store. I'm using a butterfly bolt until something catches my eye.

I colored the visible outside portion of the plate with the same blue stained glass spray paint that I used on my windshield and lowers.

I had to Dremel the base of the APC filter to accomodate the baseplate screws. Some of the trimming touched up against the filter medium. I used silicon caulk wherever there was a chance that I might have compromised the medium. If I were to start from scratch, I would eliminate the trimming process by using screws that could be countersunk flush to the baseplate.

Happy to answer any questions.

As Artie Johnson used to say "very interesting...". A very unique and innovative intake! I've never seen one of those filters before. Is it something you bought locally or did you order it online?

I got mine online, but have since noticed them at Advanced Auto Parts.

I have considered doing that myself after seeing it on Gadget's site.
I have seen those filters at Autozone and wondered about how far they
would stick out. Any problems with clearance for your knee?
It does look great.

The great knee clearance is a primary recommendation for this mod. On my previous Classics, I had the Coyote mod that used a 9" K&N filter. In comparison to that, this mod makes it seem like there is no air filter at all.

Eyeball (not plumb-line): The front, outer edge of the cone is directly under the edge of the tank. The back edge of the cone extends out an inch or so.

CJ about the cold air intake: Yes, I've seen it mentioned. Unfortunately, my indepth car experience stopped at a '68 VW bus. I assumed all air would be cold on the intake. Guess not, if they had to differentiate.

I really like that setup Bob.

Problem is, is that the intake "drone" to me is more annoying than real loud pipes!! I imagine that yours makes the usual loud sucking sound??

The noise IS there, but not bothersome to me. I de-baffled at the same time I did the air mod, so, to my rather simple mind, it's just something that accompanies the much-better exhaust tone.

It only seems to draw my attention when I'm cranking to higher RPMs. But then, testosterone-induced reasoning must convince me that that sound is part and parcel of a monsterously mean (blue) machine.

That said, I'll probably be hearing it all the time now. Thanks, BD.

Oh boy, you give me a monster setup line like this and I would be remiss if I didn't mention BD and "sucking sound" in the same sentence. I'll leave the rest to the imagination.
