Mac Frozen In?? Thanks ALL!

Thanks all for the responses and links..Happy and safe Holiday!!On an earlier thread I asked Mac if he could explain the swing arm adjustment procedure. I received no response from him and he is usually really good to all of us for taking the time in doing so. I guess he is frozen in for the winter and to cold for the computer gizmo's to transmit through the lines. SOOoooo can anyone tell me/us the procedure/mod for adjusting the swing arm side play. Would appreciate it as I'm diving into that area over the holidays and probably beyond? Thanks in advance!

Oddly enough, before I saw this post I was thinking it's been awhile since Mac posted here.

Apart from making shims to take up any side play the safest plan would be to get new swing arm seals ahead of time and hope the new seals take up any side play. After installing the new seals check the side play to see if it is excessive. Thats what I would do if I wanted to get the job done in one day. Almost guaranteed the dealer does not have them in stock.

He did touch on this subject just the other day in the serious wobble thread. Re: Serious wobble.

It happens.

If the CT has over 500 kioles on it it should happen less. It happened to me before that 500 and never since, and i was in a sharp decell both times.

I would ck tire psi, and swing arm slop which hasn't been discussed in a long time.

The dammed seal on the swing arms act as thrust washers which is plain nuts!

Raise the rear wheel off the ground, stuff the swing arm from the right to the left and pull it back several times to get the idea.

With it stuffed to the left as seated, measure the gap between the frame and the swing arm closely, then pull it back as hard as you can and measure that. Subtract the smaller figure from the larger and if you get 0.138 or more your swing arm seals are dead whether or not they leak any grease.

By Rights the slop should not be 0.002 but a new bike on the show room floor will be over that.

Mac has addressed this issue in the Technical Board section. It's in the Periodic Maintenance thread.
