Does everything else work? When you turn the switch on, does the needle do like it used too?

Id check the plug at the speedo as Jared suggested, perhaps it came loose or a wire chaffed through or broke.

Maybe the speed sensor went for a crap. Im not sure whats involved to test it, perhaps the shop manual has a test for it.

Im not sure where it is located on the bike but it would be worth looking into just to make sure.

Speedo Quit Working
Mine did basically the same thing, except when I turned my switch on, everything worked except the speed needle. Sometimes it would work fine (go all the way over and back) and sometimes it would just sit there and vibrate. I thought sure it was the speed sensor too. I got one off ebay for $6.49 + shipping, installed it, and it didn't change anything. So I checked the service manual, in the "Electrical System" section, it shows tests you can do on all the sensors and the speedometer. It turned out that my "meter gauge" (the actual speedometer) was bad. I bought one off ebay (from same bike as the speed sensor) for $149, installed it, and all has been well since. Derry, if you got a service manual, it's time to get it out..........

While your riding next slow give the side of the speedo housing a small swift WHACK!!! Seriously!!! It is likely that the needle is stuck! Happens. Seen it (done it on mine a few times) a small whack and it works fine. Everything else is working including the odometer I would bet.
Non technical, but it works. Hope that's all it is. Scott
