USA Meets The UK!

About 10 years ago, hubby and I got a used 1982 PE Suzuki Dirt Bike. It needed a little work, so I hit the internet and found a forum for Suzuki dirt bikes. I met a very nice fellow that was a ton of help to us! Dave, my UK buddy (from Yorkshire), stayed in touch by email and phone all these years. He was another friend that encouraged me to ride....he rides sport bikes, but I don't hold that against him!!

Fast forward to now!!! After ALL these years, we are finally going to meet in person later this week!!! He flew here to the states Saturday with his wife and 7 year old daughter. They are currently in VA visiting some of his wife's family, but are coming to DC Thursday morning and staying in Georgetown until they fly back on Saturday evening. They want to spend that time with Chaz and I and want us to take them sight-seeing!

So, does anybody know any phrases or words that I should be aware of?! For example, one day he wrote to me that he was pissed. I wrote back concerned and asked who he was mad at?! That's when I found out that pissed there means drunk!!!!!

Oh, he also mentioned he would love the chance to ride my bike and hubby's for a short spin while here! I joked with him and asked if he thought he could handle some "real" bikes and ride them on the proper side of the road!!! ;)

I work with a lot of Brits, let's see what I can think of...

Bollocks (also bollox, bollix) = balls (men's parts) alt: screwed up, nonsensical, as in "My boss bolloxed the meeting".

Lift = elevator
Boot = trunk of a car
Bonnet = hood of a car
Bangers = sausage links
Bangers and mash = sausages and mashed potatos
Torch = flashlight

CheriAnn, while he's in Washington, why not introduce him to the President and tell him he can take the Prez home as a remembrance. I'm sure no one would mind.

Cherri,

Just remember that turn about is fair play. You take him sight seeing so when you get to the UK, he has to do the same!!! :)

We had an exchange student from Germany several years ago. We took her so many places that we could. We did Disney World, Several National Parks, Mount Rushmore, the mountains several times and many other places. Her father was over in the U.S. for work and we invited him here for as long as he could stay and took him several places around Denver and Ft. Collins. We now have a standing invitation from them when we make it to Europe. And to let you know, we will make it there one day!!! Have to visit the mother land.

How generous of you and your wife!!!
He has always given us the invitation of coming for a visit and staying with them. His wife is from Sweden and they travelt here for the holidays every December. So, he has even extended the invitation for us to visit with them in Sweden

I think this is going to be fun!!!! Already I am getting a chuckle in the difference between our meanings. He rented a car when they got here in the states, but the way he told me about it was, "I've "hired" a Pontiac GT something or other. It's a 3.5 litre V6, very nice and automatic as well"!

Ahh yes, my wife "hires a car" too when we've needed to rent one.

A band aid is a "Plaster". I thought maybe it was just her, but it's on ianicky's link too.

My wife's job doing tax audit for a world wide engineering company requires precise and accurate writing. Sometimes she brings work home and reads sentences to me. I'll say to change something, she'll be sure she's right (the British way), I'm sure I'm right (after all it's an American company).....and we let google settle it. A million hits for my way, 200,000 her way..the Americans win! :)

Cookies are "biscuits".

And all the food here is too sweet. Snickers bars and everything have less sugar over there. She has a sugar alarm that keeps going off. The other day I was eating multi grain chips and her sugar alarm went off...sure enough the label listed sugar. So be ware that unless he's used to it, everything will be too sweet.
