hmmm, I guess there are plusses and minusses to balancing either way.

No more Dyna Beads for me

You're entitled to your opinion, but I'm leaving my Dynabeads in. I've seen rubber dust inside of tires with nothing rolling around in them.

No more Dyna Beads for me

Interesting.... I have these in my rear tire right now. Please try and get some idea of how deep these cut the inside of the tire.

They were newer a year ago, and I figured trying them might be interesting.

Look the beads over too, and see if they are coated with rubber.

I would expect some rubber dust is normal, but not removing a whole lot of rubber...

Back in the day I used to find balls of rubber that were removed somehow in a tire with nothing else in it. I suppose a little dirt stayed adheared in a new tire friom shipping and moved around inside to collect any other loose dust. These rubber beads formed in normal wear and tear. Some were as large as 1/4".

So I am not sure it is time to panic.

I don't care if they wear the tire out faster. I am going to the darkside when this one is done anyway.

Watchman,

Maybe you should let the folks at Innovative Balancing know what you found?

Honestly, other than somebody who had a tire/wheel imbalance so excessive it took 4 ounces of lead weights to balance it (their 2 oz of Dyna Beads wasn't enough), this is the first negative comment I've read about Dyna Beads.

No more Dyna Beads for me

Hey Jim, you were experiencing a rapid wear rate on you rear tire when I met you in Custer. Did you have the beads in that tire also and do you think that contributed to the wear rate? Many years ago there were several products like the beads for cars. My dad ran a service station (gas and mech work and sold tires, Cooper tires to be exact) and he used to coment that the liquid balancers and tire sealants all created a ton of extra heat in tires and made then wear/fail sooner and so I have never used then.

I am still trying to figure out why the wear rate is so different from one bike to another on our OEM tires. I have 21,000 on my 07 now. I replaced the orig rear tire at 13,800 before it was worn down to wear bars because the 4,000+ trip to Custer was comming up. I still have the Orig front stone on the bike, it's not down to wear bars, not cupped and looks to be good for 24-25,000 before changing. My rear replacement (OEM stone) now has 8,000 on it and right at 50% worn so should go about 15,000 which is what the first one would have done if I had not had the long trip comming up. Am I the only person in our group having this experience?

No more Dyna Beads for me

I haven't used them, but wondered about this effect too.

Of course sand in a tire is much more abrasive, so the example of the mudders wearing the insides makes sense. I'm familiar with plastic bead paint removal. You can blast all the paint off something with plastic beads, but it doesn't harm or pit the metal at all like sandblasting does.

So it's had me wondering how much a tire is like the metal and isn't harmed a bit, and how much is it like the paint and can get knocked off? Of course beads rolling around till they get in balance isn't the same force the the plastic bead air guns blast them with, but the concept has been rolling around in my head.

First, I have never used the beads, but was/is considering it.
You mentioned that you balanced the tires and then added the dyna-beads. Could this extra balancing have played a factor in the issue?

No more Dyna Beads for me

My observation would be:
1. There would already be lot of fine dust inside the tire when it is new from the factory, and that dust could coalesce around some of the dynabeads, not because they are wearing it off of the tire, but because the beads give the loose dust something to glom onto.
2. Putting weights on the wheel to balance it, and then having the bead also could be counterproductive.
3. Could be a bad tire? or something loose in the steering?
4. Possibly the Avon is a softer compound and gives off more dust anyway, with or without beads?

Just some thoughts.

I have sometimes wondered , that the beads would wear on the tire and the rim as well. I guess they do to some extent.

When I went to the Dyna Bead website they say not to balnce your wheels. Just put in the beads. I wonder if that could be the problem?

No more Dyna Beads for me

I remember years ago I tried a bottle of some tire flatproof product. When it was time to change this tire I was dealing with a slimey gooey mess all over the tire and rim. It was a pain to wash off and didnt work as described. Some of these products are just a gimmick and are not all they say they are.

No more Dyna Beads for me

This is interesting! I have worn one tire out 28,000 km ( Avon Venom) and there was no dust in it! How ever, when I looked at the new Venom before I took it down to get it installed there appeared to be quite a bit of flash left on the inside. I mentioned it to the shop who installed the tire and he said you see it time to time and he just cuts it off with a razor knife. So, maybe the tire had excessive flash inside and the beads just wore them off? I personally know a trucker who turned me on to the Dyna Beads years ago and he used them in all of his big rigs and his Gold Wings also. When I wear the next tire out I will have a boo and see if there is any extra wear in the inside!
