Running rich?

OK folks, here I am again with another need for expert advice. A couple months ago I bought my 04 with 22k. It has a Kury Hypercharger, Cobra FI module and Cobra Slashcuts (boy do they sound good). When I test road it, all went fine and I confirmed that with the wifey, who was watching. When we got home, all was fine. Last Tuesday, it was 41 degrees so I decided to take a ride. When I started the bike, there was smoke; not a lot but obvious. I didn't use the idle control or choke, just moved the throttle a little and she warmed up soon after. When I rolled the throttle...more smoke. It rode fine around the block but I'm concerned. I've started it a couple times since and the same thing. Sometimes it doesn't want to idle. I'm guessing:
1. running rich..I haven't checked the settings on the FI processor.
2. rings :'(

Will someone please tell me the bike is running rich and adjustments of the processor is all I need?

Thanks in advance.

You might want to clean the throttle body and the butterfly on the right side. It is located behind the dog bowl on the right side. Spray some SeaFoam or some other type of carb cleaner in it and use a toothbrush to clean it good. I know a dirty throttle body will cause it to idle roughly. The factory setting on the Cobra FI2000R is 3-5-0. Not sure where you need to be with the hypercharger. I would check and see where it is set. I would go back to the factory setting and then make slight adjustments from there.

Another thing it possibly could be if you haven't ridden much is carbon build up. If you get a chance to take it out and open it up you might blow it out. I owned a new 1970 GTO and after a week of city driving I would need to take it out on the interstate and really open it up. I could see all that smoke coming out the exhaust. Then all of a sudden it would quit smoking and really take off. Happens sometimes.

I will get on that tomorrow. I had bigger winter plans without having to deal with this. Thanks for the advice.

With only 22,000 I wouldn't think it is your rings. Haven't heard of anyone having to replace rings with that low mileage. Probably just the throttle body or like I said if you get a chance take it out and ride it hard. Check the settings on the Cobra fuel module and see where it is set. Good luck.

Should be fuel then. My Cobra is set to 3-5-0 now as well and that should be fairly easy for you to take a quick look at. If you have a tach it is pretty easy to dial in the first pot. Just pull the choke, and adjust pot one, the tach should raise to a point and then you will see it drop off when it gets too rich. Right before that is where you want pot 1. Without a tach, you have to go by feel and watching the bike. The second pot can be changed based on feel as you ride it, but 5 is a good starting point. Ride it and then move it up or down a 1/2 setting and see if the bike feels stronger or not, and just adjust accordingly. Good luck.

Thanks for the advise Cocheese. I thought I might be able to get out today but 21 is just too chilly. Think I'll stay in the garage and tinker a bit. Can't wait to get this solved though.

It may be just the colder weather, the ecm will allow a little more fuel to be dumped in while the motor is cold. Once the motor is warmed up the temp sensor should allow the fuel to be cut back and run normally again.
My bike does this as well, the colder it is the worse it smells until it is warmed up.

On the 2004 blue/silver bike, my setup is identical to yours with the exception of the hypercharger. I do have the intake opened up with Chucksters dual plate system and the baffles pulled from the pipes.

It runs too rich with the Cobra FI recommended settings, I even have the pots at 0/0/0 right now and it is still plenty rich. I'm going to experiment once we warm back up, and bypass the CobraFI to see what it does but my observations are that the 00-04's are not as lean as the '05's and beyond.

If your settings are 0-0-0, it should be the same as stock.

I haven't checked my settings yet but it warms up to the 40's this weekend so I will take a look at the FI. Fubar, if what you say is true, then I wonder why we even need the processor.

Some don't.

The easy way to find out is by pulling the inline fuse. Then go ride it and see if there is any difference.

The settings on mine are 1.5-2.5-0, it was spewing the black smoke also with the factory settings. Not now, it runs just as clean as can be.

Run a bottle of Seafoam through you fuel sytem, it may need to be cleaned out.

Before you get too carried away here testing things and changing things...as others have suggested....clean the throttle body and put some seafoam in the gas tank and drive it like you stole it for a tankful.
