Crap-Another Oil ??? Updated

I just had the 15K service done and was told there was only a quart or so of oil in her. Do these bikes burn oil or did I just wait way to long between changes? It's been about a year and probably 7K miles. :-/

UPDATE: So I got the bike back today and she's running smooth. I will definetly be checking things more regularly and will probably start doing my own oil changes after what I paid this morning
It should be easy to figure when it's time for the next change since it turned to 17,000 miles just prior to getting to work from the dealer.

And I think we should have a new sub-forum just for BD and Todd to pick on each other

He just said it. I did lay it down in a ditch since that last change. Picked it up dusted it off, replaced a few parts and been ridin' her since.

No leaks anywhere?

7K is longer than I like to go between changes. I haven't exceeded 4K yet.

Ballast,
If you run your Nomad at a high RPM alot, your oil could be "misting" and blowing into your air cleaner. I used to loose oil before I installed a crankcase breather filter.

If not, I would just keep an eye on your oil level a little more often and change your oil at about 3-4,000 miles.

My 2 centavos worth.

Crap-Another Oil ??? Updated

I've got about 3500 miles on this change with only about 4000 on the bike. Last week I added about 1/2 quart to bring it up.

My Nomad has 11.5 k on her and has never used a drop of oil between changes and I have ridden many trips at 80+mph. Just make sure it's up to the top of the site glass in the morning before your first ride of the day and monitor it each month.

Oil? These things need oil? What is this site glass you speak of? I thought you just got on them, ride and then shine the chrome. Geeze Louise, I've learnt sumpin new today.

Just kidding around. I check mine every trip. I don't use much between changes...usually change mine every 3-4K, depending on what is going on then.

If you only had one quart of oil left in your bike you would have known about it. It would have been knocking like crazy. I heard a slight knock in mine and it was only a little under a half a quart low. And i change my oil about every 3000 to 3500.

Did they get the final drive drain plug confused with the crankcase drain plug? You should have got an "idiot" light on with only a quart in the case.

I am not sure but if it had only one quart in it, you would be fixing a engin I am pretty sure it would be having major problems if rode much like that and at high speed 65 and above it would not be able to pump enough oil to keep it from siezing up. jmo

Check the oil regularly. Get yourself a little telescoping extension mirror, sit on the seat, keep the bike upright, and use the mirror to view the oil level in the sight glass.

Check the oil regularly. Get yourself a little telescoping extension mirror, sit on the seat, keep the bike upright, and use the mirror to view the oil level in the sight glass.
Or you can use a 2x4 and put it under the kickstand and then look at the sight glass. Gets it close to level.

Not that close. Just moving the bike slightly to either side makes a big difference in the sight glass. You want it level, not close to level.

+1

2x4 will not bring it close enough to level.
