Maintence Suggestions
OK, pretend other then oil changes I know about as much on working on a bike as Charlie Sheen knows about how to treat women. I bought my 2005 Nomad a year and a half ago with 11, 500 miles and I now have about 20,000 and as far as I know it has had no maintenence other then new battery and oil changes. I want to get some preventative maint. done like change oil in forks, etc. Any suggestions what I need to do? I've looked at the maint. spreadsheets, and have a small clue, but I would like to take it down the road to the motorcycle shop and tell Dave I would like _______ and _______ and maybe ______ checked and serviced.....
As always any suggestions would be appreciated. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Swing arm service should be at the top of the list. It may have been done previously but I would have it checked or at least when you have the rear tire replaced.

1. Swing arm maintenance, including checking drive shaft, u-joints and splines.
2. Final drive lube/oil change. 3. clutch and brake fluid change 4. coolant change those are the top things i can think of right now, im sure others will chime in.

Most shops have a spring service special that goes over the complete bike, and makes sure everything is checked and serviced.

So, how much does the swing arm maintenance usually cost? Just curious...

i bought my 2007 a year ago since then i have serviced the swing arm -it had very little grease in it. did the u joint and drive shaft lube at the same time. changed to final drive lube. then i was going to grease the fork [steering] bearings but when i pulled them the bottom bearing was shot full of rust and pitted very badly ended up replacing both bearings and seals the part that was hard to understand was that the steering felt fine before i pulled it apart.

The swing arm serice is straight forward if you have the tools. It is rather time consuming, but not hard. I can do one in around 5 hours, but I am a x foreign car tech, and have more than enough tools to face most any problems. I don't however do that service in any 5 hours as i take extra care for cleaning and lubing every single part that occures in the job.
A shop may charge that time at shop rate what ever that is.

I have everything done at the dealer except oil and oil filter. I had the swing-arm removed, greased and a Zerk fitting installed plus some other stuff for under $500. My dealer gets $80 an hour for labor. I'm not mechanically inclined and don't care to learn. I bought the bike to ride not work on. You will find some of the guys on here are a little to obsessive with the maintenance. ;)

It ain't no 100...., but under 500 might be ok. 240 might be better, which is 6 hours by 40 dollars.

my Honda dealer charges 65 an hour. I had a new cobra on rear, cleaned and lubed swing-arm, molyed both splines on drive shaft, top off coolant tank which what was supposed to have been done at a Kawasaki dealer along with warranty work :(" title="" border="0"/>
shop supplies, taxes and tire $596. I talked to the mechanic today and he said your right factory skimps on the grease.
