I certainly hope they find the driver of the Civic.

I saw that this morning on the news where they showed the wreck-site... not a pretty site for sure; and really upset me to see it. It was really terrible to those involved, and I feel for them...

Group-riding presents its own set of complications and danger; one of which is how to handle a car wanting to pass (or is passing) the group.

There are suggested ways to handle it to give the vehicle some room if it is needed while passing (whether the driver is an @ss or not). I know most groups either don't practice it; or simply don't know about it -- and because of that sometimes accidents happen -- especially when you have a large group of bikes.

In our group-rides for the NCR Rally this past summer, we went over how to handle it because we were in an area where vehicles are wanting to pass (or do) all the time on the two-lane roads there. Some of them are just local people having to get to work; but an occasional one is nothing less than a jerk.

Overall, the group did a great job and we were able to let several get by us without complications. We did have one @ss blow by us and swerve back in front of us at the last minute before nearly hitting an oncoming car head-on. If I would have had the opportunity to talk to the idiot after that, I might have nearly killed-him -- slowly, and painfully ;)

Here is the word-document for the procedure. It is complicated as h@ll to read and understand; but works if you have a group of able riders.

Hope it makes sense. ;)

I did a post earlier today in the off motorcycle topic board. Has a short video with it and an article written up about it.

Very sad that these things continue to happen. The leader of the Saddle Tramps estimated the Civic was traveling at 95 MPH and the driver of the vehicle that hit them was under the influence of alcohol.

Given that situation with the cars traveling so fast... there isn't any way to handle that.

I didn't know about the speed of the Civic, but I did read about the other driver and alcohol. I never have understood the need to drive that fast on any public road. At 95mph, there is no way that either the Civic or the bikers could react fast enough to avoid injury. When they catch this scumbag, they need to chain him to a tree, and run something at him at 95 mph !!

Greg, I tried to bring up the group riding link, but I was not able to do it. I think its a problem here as to the messages that popped up. If you think it is worth it I will pursue it further. Thanks for digging for it. Gerry

Gerry... whether it is worth it or not is up to whether you'll ever use it (or be able to). It isn't rocket-science, but none the less it is a technique that can work. I have used it to varying degress with several group-rides I have put together and it was very helpful.

When you click on the link; pro-boards does a few "odd-things" and makes it seem like you are getting no-where. Be sure to scroll-down after hitting the link and you should see a new "window" with a message telling you that a download is "loading". Next you'll have to make sure your computer will "allow" it to fully load -- much like a pop-up blocker where you over-ride it. Next, it will finish loading, and then a window should pop-up asking you if you want to open or load the document (or sometimes it may ask if you want to save-it. Don't know why it changes from open to saving. It must be a pro-boards "thing").

Anyway... it is a word-doc that I put together in a copy-and-paste situation from an old motorcycle club's site section on group-riding rules and etiquette. I thought it was interesting and made a lot of sense.

However, if you have a bunch of riders you are riding with that are not somewhat experienced it would be difficult to do the more sophisticated maneuver of breaking into smaller groups from the larger group (if you read the doc you'll know what I mean). On the other hand... if you are riding with a bunch of riders that are not experienced riders, or experienced in group-riding... you are running a big risk riding with them. Just saying... if you know what I mean. ;)

If you cannot get it opened, send me your email and I'll send it as an attachment.

GW

I saw the link to this story on another mv board I visit. The person who posted it was suggesting leaving enough space to allow vehicles to pass and cut back in the group and pass again but did not go into specifics.
