speedometer dropped to zero...

I'm riding my bike home from work, I look down and see my speedometer go from 40 straight to 0. then I see my tachometer isn't working as well. I'm thinking it just became disconnected. but can't be for sure.
Please let me know what you think i should do and how to do it

I noticed in another thread you will be or are doing some Mods...
If so I would double check connections.
Also check for blown fuses.
I'm sure that the more experienced crew will chime in shortly.

Thats a strange one, because on a 99 the speedo is mechanical. Im suspecting a bad speedo cable, or not installed correctly after youve had it off.
The tach could be a loose plug or wire causing it to quit.
I think it a coincidence that they both acted up at the same time.
Check your wiring plugs and anything youve done lately on the bike.

Bad drive gears at the wheel, bad or broken cable somewhere in the conduit, probably at the bottom, or loose and it pulled out of one end or the other.

The tach I can't say since I have no idea if it is cable driven or eletronic, but my bet is it too is cable drive.

Raise the ft wheel, un do the wheel end, spin the wheel and see if the square drive turns.
If not it is pookerd, and you need new gears.

If it turns pull the bloody cable out, and expect to have a short piece...

Could just be loose too, at either end.

I took the lower end of the cable off the wheel and it was, as Mac said "a short piece". I had the same problem with mine. Just have to wait now for the new speedo cable because the Good Lord knows that the local shop doesn't stock a speedo cable.

Used to be a car jobber like NAPA could make the inner cable up.... All you needed was the right length. The ends are square right? might be 1 and 1/4" long square ends?

Mac, I think it is 1/4" or less square.
