LUGGAGE CARRIER W/O BACKREST?
I would like to keep my stock passenger backrest and add a carrier behind. I've check most of the units fellow members have mentioned but all seem to have a cushiony backrest already attached. Has anyone in there travels found a unit without a backrest that is of reasonable quality and looks????????????

As far as I know, only a Harley-style tourpack opens to the side, but they are pretty large and may stick too far out the rear, plus they would be too big and heavy to mount on a luggage rack. You would need a purpose-built platform like a wompus rack. I have an H-D tourpak clone, and if I wanted to I could could remove it and the Wompus rack and install the passenger backrest in 10-15 minutes. Just a thought, they can be easily swapped out.

LUGGAGE CARRIER W/O BACKREST?
What bike are you talking about? 1500, 0r 1600, since both have a different sissy bar, and so different rack, or is it a 1700, which is different still....

LUGGAGE CARRIER W/O BACKREST?
Guess I didn't use enough information for fellow members to respond..sorry!....................I have a 2008 Nomad (1600). I was interested in a trunk that I could attach directly to the stock rack and keeping the stock backrest. My plan was to use the trunk for long trips and remove it when running local. I planned to design some form of attachment for mating the trunk to the bars. I guess some comments indicate this isn't a good idea but you never know unless you ask. With this added information whats my chances of proceeding the way I was thinking?????
Thanks for any info BUTCH - Can't open your photo at work, will check on my computer at home but not until friday PM. JEMMAH |

I don't think most racks would be strong enough to do what you explained, except for a Wompus rack. You could mount a HD Tour Pak with their quick release mechanism that is available from HD.
Sounds like thats what your after.

LUGGAGE CARRIER W/O BACKREST?
Like Ring said, a stock luggage rack isn't designed to carry a lot of weight. I know I'll get someone saying "I carried 2 full beer kegs 150 miles on my Cobra luggage rack", but they simply are not designed to carry a lot of weight, especially for an extended period. That's the reason we use a Wompus rack to carry a tourpak. They ARE designed to carry the weight.
You're looking for some kind of hybrid rack that doesn't exist in ready-made form. Most tourpaks are available without a backrest pad, I paid $279 for the backrest on my tourpack. It was optional.
