Stock Tires ??

I have 8500 miles on my stock Bridgestones.

I was looking at my tires this PM. Front tire looks good but not sure about the rear.

My question is, should the rear tire have a center grove in it like the front tire? Mine does not.

And, do these tires have wear or safety bars (helping you know when to change tires) like car tires?

Last ??s - If I need a new tire, can I run a Avon Cobra on the rear and keep the Stone up front? What size Avon?

Yes, there are wear bars. Yes, you can put an Avon on the back with the stock tire on the front. 180/70-16 is what most use.
This is what the stock tire should look like when new:

You have some thinking to do.

The swing arm will need servicing now by someone competent. The book called for at 7,500 miles. In the maintance section there is a topic with a few pics.

You have a choice in car tires as well as MC tires.

And that junk stock tire was junk on the show room floor. The junk on ft might run out to 13,000 if you are unlucky.

Changed My stock BS back tire when the center grove was gone(had to wet it with finger) to see it. Thought I could see a little of the wear bars then.

I am looking at the manual - page 2-4. It says Swingarm Pivot Lubricate at 15,000 miles. Is that correct??

Indeed it does, but in my 2000 1500 book it says 7,500. cute trick, as the 2 differences are the 1600 swing arm is a little wider and the shock towers on the 1600 have needle bearings to lube.

Std proceadure for this type bearing is and always has been 8,000 miles, on any vehical that uses this type bearing.

Typically better than 1/2 the Nomads do not have proper grease in the swing arm pivot in the first place and about half have defective U joints.

I had failed to notice the change in text, another book error to note in the damnned book!

You are correct the book is not.

Stock Tires ??

I purchased a new set of Avon Cobra tires for my 2005 Nomad 1600 at 38215 miles. I now have 52500 miles on them. I love these tires. I could probably get 2-3 thousand more miles out of the front and maybe 1-1.5 thousand out of the back tire. I am running the AV71 150/80 RV 16 on the front and the AV72 180/70 HR 16 on the back. After trying Dunlops a few times (these suck), Metzler 880's (these are good), I find the Avon Cobras, by a huge margin to be the best I have used so far. The handling is exemplary in all weather conditions. (I am 365 rider. If the road ain't icy, I am on it.) While a bit more expensive than the others, I find them very much worth it. I am buying a new set from http://www.motoxoutlet.net and paying $153.80 for the front and $195.19 for the rear and shipping is free. I don't think I will be looking for a new brand any time soon.

That is really good service. I have a CT on the rear and Avon Cobra on the front. I have been running 38 PSI in the front. Love this tire.

What have you been running in the front?

I got 9,523 miles out of the rear Bridgestone and got 10,996 miles out of the front Bridgestone. I replaced both with Dunlop Elite 3's (made in USA) and the handling and ride are the best I have ever had. There is no noise that I can hear with them either. I especially like the fact they are made in the USA. Helps keep a few Americans working.
