Need new rear brake pads
Called my local dealer where I bought the bike and wanted to see if he had some OEM pads and he said no, they would have to order them, takes a 1week. he said they are organic pads(non-sinistered). is this correct? because when you order from catalogs they say dont use sinistered on non-sin, and vice versa. dealer were $65 and catalog looks around $40.

Toss up Doc... The cheapos work but eat rotors faster, and may stop you faster. The way I deal with it is to not use brakes much. I am almost stopped, or stopped with out them, and hold at the few lights I have.
In the city I have no choice of course, but i avoid the city. Even then I will slow down alot and draw out the lights to get them to change before I get there, when I can. I can get 40,000 miles out of a set of pads because i don't use them.

I dunno what OEM is... I run EKB / EBK??? I think, lookin back Doc..
Last time I used any was in Cal, and I didn't need new then, but thought the better of riding back east on 1/2 used pads with a trailer and being 2 up.. Cadd had them on hand to and rotors but i didn't need those at all and refused them. The bike has 18,000 now... the 06 that is.. I think the 01 is parts of a Toyota these days.... These rotors are soft no matter what... Sooner or later even I am going to need new ones.

I just replaced my rear pads with EBC sintered, P/N is FA231HH, I got 20,000 miles out of them. They are not very thick even when new, about 1/8" thick. Maybe your old ones are still not bad?

10,000 miles on the stock rear pads? You got a heavy right foot, Doc? I looked at my rear pads when I replaced my rear tire and they look barely worn at 21,000. But then I don't use my rear brake a whole lot.

EBC that's it... and yeah they look worn out new.. I have a set still in the package for Liberty. They are in the barn in a box of yammi parts..

I assumed when they squeal everytime you hit the brakes they need pads?? so I look and there is no pad left, maybe 1mm. front are still real thick(4mm+) Im in the big city and do alot of stop-go. So whats the concensus here: are the original pads sinistered or non. i looked in dennis kirk catalog and they say non. gadgets says sinistered. and your supposed to use the right one it came out with. ::) ::)

I also checked my front pads and at 54,000 miles they are about half worn so far. I have a spare set ready.

I will try to stay away from the semi-metallic pads. They tend to eat up auto and truck rotors so I'm sure they will do the same or worse to bike rotors. What is the difference between sinistered and non-sinistered??

Need new rear brake pads
Hi Doc, I just replaced the rear pads on my 05 with 37,000 kms. They had less than a 1/16th left on them. When new there is 3/16th to a 1/4 inch.
The rear disc is not in great shape. I dare not ask the dealer what a new one would have cost, probably a weeks wage. I replaced the OEM ones with OEM ones. $68 Canadian. |

Need new rear brake pads
I replaced my rear OEM pads with the thin looking EBC pads the first time that I needed pads on the rear (about 15,000 miles) and they always seem to make a rubbing or hissing sound when braking was applied. Since then, I have gone back to OEM pads, which are thicker and make no hissing sound. Don't know what that was all about, but happier with the OEM ones.

If they are really at 1mm it is time... Squeels are not because of worn out pads unless you are at metal to metal contact. Squeels are caused by varnished pads, rusted inside and or outside edges of rotors and not chamfered properly pad edges, which all share harmonic vibration characteristics.
When the time comes i will go with EBC sintered pads too. here is a definition Doc. DP sintered pads are made of a complex mix of metallic powders (to absorb heat), refractory material (to provide friction), friction modifiers (to alter feel), graphites (to minimise rotor wear and eliminate noise), mixed together, pressed to form the shape, then sintered at high temperature and pressure. Best I can do on organic pads Doc.. I didn't write it, just don't see these much anymore. They're also softer than brake pads made of other materials, which means they're often quieter. The downside of organic brake pads is that, because they're softer, they typically wear faster. As they wear, they also create more dust than other types of brake pads. Because of these considerations, organic brake pads aren't a good choice for heavy vehicles like trucks or for high performance cars that may need to stop quickly from top speed. Organic and Kevlar brake pads are best suited for small cars that don't typically do a lot of aggressive driving. The light weight of the car, as well as limited hard stops, keeps organic brake pads in good shape.
