Kickstand worn out - what?

Another preventive maintenance check to add?

My kickstand springs fell off onto the pavement today as I swung it back started to pull away. (kickstand fell back down and cut out the engine)

Turns out my kickstand mounting is so worn out it was just flopping - so much in fact the double spring just fell off. Wow!

The mounting bolt is really worn and same for the frame tab. Plan is to get a new bolt and try to grind the frame tab flat enough to fit in a thrust bearing (washer) to take up the slack AND the wear and tear.

Of course, I'll be sure to push a little grease in there once in a while and that's my suggestion ;) to y'all. Check it for wear and make sure the metal to metal mounting isn't grinding.

21K miles on my '05

Kickstand worn out - what?

Good idea Cal. Somebody suggested that very thing a few months ago and I took the advice. That thing is a bear to get off, and mine was dry and corroded. I greased the bolt and packed as much grease as I could get into it before I put it reassembled it. Now when I touch it she flip right into position with no effort.

I plan to drill a small hole in the siide so I can grease it with a needle fitting.

I grease my pivot point, and where the spring attaches as well, I can feel it when it requires a bit of lube, it becomes stiff and awkward to use. A bit of oil frees it right up and helps keep it from wearing quicker.

Good or bad I use Silicon Spray.
It gets right inside of all of it.
When my stand starting getting sticky I sprayed the entire area, let it sit for a few and wiped off the excess.
Now the stand moves almost effortlessly.

I use the silicon spray lubricant also. Works great and no mess. The only downside to using this is the required application intervals are shorter.

My bolt was worn and the mounting wallered out when the 30K service was done on my 07. Tech recommended periodic lube, and if/when it gets worse, that the mount will need to be welded, ground and drilled to restore the metal.

From service manual:

Points: Lubricate with Grease.
Throttle Inner Cable Upper Ends [A]
Clutch Lever Pivot (Apply silicone grease)
Brake Lever Pivot (Apply silicone grease)
Brake Pedal Pivot
Side stand

Owners manual states to lubricate pivots and side stand with motor oil every 7500 miles (12K kliks)

Mine did it a while back so I ordered a new bolt and it fixed the problem. It really needs a thin shim to pick the peg up a little higher but mine is ok without it.

Kickstand worn out - what?

I had a post last summer on this same topic. I had to buy a replacement spring at the local auto parts store. No more problem.

After reading enough issues on this I went out and took everything of the kickstand and cleaned and used a high quality graphite grease on all the parts and reassembled. I found no unusual wear but I feel better now...
