Lower Fairings and gas mileage

I have the premuex lower fairings and like the look and extra storage, but when it gets hot here in AZ, I take them off for more air.
I have the chuckster 2 plate K&N filter intake right side only and fuel processor and debaffled pipes. When I first did the intake and fuel processor I got 37-38 mpg, no pinging and run on regular unleaded.
A couple of months ago, I started having some pinging. It also seemed that the fan was coming on more. I started using premium gas and that helped. But still got pinging in 5th gear if I tried to accelerate. and my gas mileage dropped to 32-35mpg
I thought I would have to mess with the fuel processor.
A couple of weeks ago, I removed my lower fairings and immediately my gas mileage improved and the fan does not come on as often. I am back up to about 37mpg and I got more air flow now that it is hot.

Big question is could the fairings have caused that much of a lower airflow for my intake?

Ive never removed my lower fairings, but I never would have thought that it would make such a difference. Also here we don't have the hot weather like you get down there.

We don't get that hot here either - but I put Hoppe vents in my lowers and there is way more air flow! I would still like to get more air flow - but I haven't figured out how to do it yet?
