best tape?
Just finished installing my garage door mod, with the push button/ switch from radio shack mounted on the top of the left side cover and the opener itself will be secured to the inside of the left cover --- any suggestions on the best way to secure the opener inside the cover? Gadget's site says to use two sided tape, which i know nothing about -- is there a "best" type of two sided tape to use, or i'm wondering if the strips of window/door insulation with both sides sticky would hold it secure and hold up better over time . . . ?

3M makes a great two sided tape, for the little bit you need Id go to any bodyshop and ask for a small piece.
They use it all the time for attaching body side moldings.

I am not a big fan of using tape or velcro to attach anything. Yes, I've done it out of desperation because I couldn't come up with a better way, but I think it looks like red neck engineering at its best. Just a notch above duct tape.
Side note: In the extremely hot, dry climate I live in, adhesives tend to not adhere very long or very well.

Use two way tape in a "permanent" type install. Use velcro in a situation where removal will likely be needed (like changing batteries). I used the velcro that came with my TFI to mount the unit.
I install factory accessories in cars (hands free phone, security systems, gps) and they use the two way tape and velcro. They are designed to handle the temperature changes that occur. Have yet to have a tape/velcro failure. (knock on wood) I would suspect a quality auto parts store should carry what you need. The 3M site may help decide what you require. Or use rope, baling wire, or liquid nails!

My hubbies '02 goldwing (he just traded in today for an '10 goldwing) has lots of addon chrome. Lots of the chrome add on on the goldwing has the double sided tape. The '02 of course is 8-9 years old and there is only one little piece of chrome on one tail light that does not stick good and Ken says it was his fault ...did something wrong when installing. And that bike has been thru lots of rain, hail, heat etc.....
He is out in the garage now putting chrome goodies on the new bike and lots of it is the double sided tape..

I have used two way tape to hold lots of things on the bike, truck and ATV, it will hold real good if applied to a clean surface.
Weve installed chrome trim on trucks and have bent it trying to remove it later on.

clean surface, stick better
hmm... the redneck way would be to leave the door open and wait for vittles to wander in.

This red neck uses the 3M trim tape with the red backing. It holds up to a lot of heat. Examples of it's use, the lights on the underside of the nomad tank, the led light on the radiator cover and the name plates on my dragster engine all high heat areas and all catch a lot of wind. I think it makes for a very clean fastener free installation. A clean surface is a must!
In case you are wondering about the name on dragster engine. TIHSEPA Try spelling it backwards.

thanks for all the ideas --- i couldn't find my baling wire, and the wife wasn't convinced about some fresh vittles, so i went ahead and closed the door, picked up some 3M tape with the red backing and we'll see how it holds on!

At work we used 3M double sided tape. It is extremely sticky and will stay in place. If that is the way you want to go I would go with 3M.
