...bigmike
Although this problem does show up more often than we would like to hear about, many bikes go through life and not have any probs with the bevel gear. Its like clutch springs, mine lasted 12k miles and some guys will get 40k or more. Its a bit of a crapshoot with stuff that wears. We never know when a problem is gonna show up. If I were you, I would not panic and get rid of your bike. It has many miles left in it and your year of bike is no more prone to problems than any other year. Unless you have your mind made up and the extra money to get a newer bike, I'd just stick with what you got. With the clutch work and the new bevel gear assesmbly replaced, you probably will get loads of trouble free miles now.... :) Glad to hear you will be back on the road again soon....

The bevel gear heated up because it's bearing were bad. How they got bad is a mystery. Had you tried to listen to these bearings, you would have discovered the problem long ago. If the tech had he too would have discovered he was wrong.
What caused the clutch to fail was boiling the brake fluid, and it became a gas state instead of a fluid. I suspect the exterior surrounding areas show sign of hi heat. lomax max has been correct all along.. I agree with him now if it matters any, so long as the bearings were replaced correctly. I for one would like to see pics of the bad parts. ANyone having a dealer do any work should tell the dealer they want their old parts, after all these still belong to you, unless warrenty work must prove to the factory these parts are bad, bvut still you should be allowed to get a few pics of them just the same.

I have been watching the original thread to see what was causing the failure and finally found this one. Glad to hear that the prob has been repaired. Now I can sleep nights.
