2000 Nomad Fi barn find

Greetings gang. I’m back with another barn find. You may remember the 99 nomad I picked up last fall. Well, I got it running and worked out the bugs......and couldn’t sell it like I intended to. Loved the thing and decided to sell my other bike instead.

So, yesterday I found a 2000 nomad fi that I picked up for 600. The guys had taken it on trade for the end final payment for a job he had done. Original owner supposedly has ridden it in every state and cared for it meticulously before had a stroke and had to give up riding. I’ll attach photos.

My questions - obviously all fluids will get replaced. The bike starts and runs, but rough and seems to leak fuel From under the tank. Fuel is bad and I’ll figure out where the leak is from. Anything else that I need to know when working on a fuel injected bike?

Also, since the price is so low, I’ve got some cash to spend. Any ideas on customizations? Lowering? Apes? Having such a good, cheap foundation I’d love to do something different than just a fix and flip.

Any thoughts?

Part of the rough running may be dirty injectors and/or dirty throttle body. I like the 1500 FI's.

Nice Bike! What D said! Well, heres the things to look for.
1. Check and see if the plastic oil pump gear had been replaced. It was all the 1999's, a few in the 2000, your is 90% ok....It was a recall. See if it had been taken care of. Just keep a eye on the oil pressure light....
2. The handlebars, due to the sweep and pullback, see if its comfortable to you. If not, and your arms and hands start going numb, back starts to hurt....put on a set of 8"-10" bagger apes or mini apes. If you change to a batwing fairing, run the bagger apes. Anything over 10", you'll have to extend the hoses and cables.
Back pain and numbness will be a thing of the past....
3. As you ride, you will find out, your butt will start to suffer. Get yourself a new seat, your butt will tank you, or at least get a Alaskan Sheepskin Pad.
You won't discover this till your first ride of 5+ hours, just like the bars. Some folks don't have trouble, but most folks do....
And get yourself a Gremlin bell, that helps ward ogg the bad stuff that can follow you home....
All else, make it your own!
Theres all kinds of stuff you can do with your bike, just look around at all the bikes at the top of the forum when you come here....it'll give you ideas.
Also, run a couple of cans of seafoam thru your tank to clean your tank, lines and injectors. Check your tires too, make sure no dryrot.....
Great to have you back!

I hate to disagree with DL, but DO NOT get yourself a Gremlin Bell.

The bell MUST be a gift from someone else.

Check your fuel hoses, sometimes they will have the orings on the injectors go bad and leak there.

Thanks guys. I am disappointed to hear about the plastic gear. I had thought they were only up to 99.

I go to pick it up tomorrow and plan on spending Monday with the fluid flushes and changes.

Had to get my sis to get my others for me....

I just didn’t want him to jinx himself.

A few years ago we had a bell exchange here, so those who didn’t have one could trade with someone else.

What a find. I absolutely love the 1500s. Take your time and do with it what you want. Reach out to Rick Reed of Luverne Kawasaki. He closed his business and has a lot of leftover parts. I have done business with him and he is a fair guy.

Good luck on your venture.

Well, I picked it up today. To my surprise, I found that it is actually a 2001 nomad which is an improvement. I disassembled most of the surface type stuff - seats, saddlebags, fuel tank.
I could start it, but it left a sizable puddle of fuel on the ground after idling for about 30 seconds. And the fuel smelled toxic. Not sure if it was just bad or full of additives.

I couldn’t find any evidence of the leak- the engine is so dusty and covered in a layer of dirt that I’m sure it would have been obvious. The only thing noticeable was in the cover over the injection assembly - there seemed to be a grimy puddle in the bottom of the cover.

Tomorrow I’m flushing all the fluids and changing the gas. We’ll see what turns up. All in all, looks like a good bike tho. All parts are there.

Project progressing. Fuel leak was simply the hose from the pump - the clamps needed to be replaced and tightened.

Front brakes shot - hoses on order as well as pads.
Oil changed and new plugs.

Other misc parts in order - new seat, some lighting as well.

I’m having problems with the clutch tho. Can’t seem to get it to engage. I started a new thread about it to hopefully get some input on it.

Just an update on the 2001 fi that I picked up. Maintenance wise I changed all fluids, new brakes all around, new plugs and air filter. The original owner had a new leather seat cover that I installed. I’ve primarily been cleaning every time I find myself waiting for parts. All chrome has been cleaned with 0000 steel wool. The only thing yet to do is rebuild clutch master cylinder and install a set of Khromeworks 10” mini apes. The windscreen is disgusting from the sun, so I uninstalled it. When I get a minute, I plan to try and clean it with the kits that clean headlight lenses.

So far I’ve only got about 1k in it - 600 for purchase and 400 for all the misc parts. If I can get the clutch sorted, I think it’ll be a great runner. I’ll attach some pics when I can.

She looks like a peach. Great job Rich. I was going to sell my 07 Classic but like it to much. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.

So, yesterday I found a 2000 nomad fi that I picked up for 600.

They hung Dick Turpin for Highway robbery, and you got away with that ?
