Fairing with a different shape

Where's our guy that does the fiberglass work (Sweden?)
How hard would it be to make a mold for a fairing with a different shape? I would like one but would like to get away from the standard Harley look. How hard would it be to make a plug for a mold that is a different shape? Maybe something like a Vaquero fairing.

Fairing with a different shape

I'm with ya on that Bobby.A Vaquero shaped fairing would be a welcome change.I wish Craige Vetter was still making fairings. The Vetter was the best frame mounted fairing ever built IMO.

I read up on it on. Looks like you can get the pink or blue foam sheets from Home Depot and glue them together and cut out a rough shape like you want. That stuff will sand pretty easy so once you get it to the shape you want, bondo it and sand till it's smooth then you can fiberglass it and make a plug for a mold. Sounds like a lot of work but you could make many from one mold. I wonder if Reckless would make a different shape? Maybe the inner fairing could stay the same. Just a thought.

It may nice to have something different, but to me the batwing style suits the Nomads the best by a long shot. Its a very traditional style. I guess thats why I have one.

I have done quite a few foam core projects over the years. Polyester resin has a tendency to melt the blue or pink Styrofoam during the cure process. it is easy to shape using a sharp cheese grater body file and hot wires easily. If you want to use this type of foam for the plug use epoxy resin instead. I would fair the the plug after the first coat of glass cloth and epoxy resin as Bondo is polyester resin based as well as being much easier to fair on a hard surface than foam. The blush from freshly cured epoxy must be well washed off with acetone before applying bondo.

Anyone ever tried a Road Glide fairing on a Nomad? You'd have to engineer the frame mounts. If I could have easily gotten a frame mounted fairing, I would have. I like them more than batwings.

Yuck!!!

No offense... but a frame mounted fairing is NOT what I like at all.

Goofy looking to me. Sits "out-there" ahead of the bike rather than being a part of the bike.

And... frame mounted fairings "screw me up" when riding since they do not "turn" with the handle-bars. It always makes me think the bike is still heading forward, even though the bars are turned.

It takes some "getting used-to" in my opinion. I have a buddy that rides a bike with a frame-mounted fairing and he loves it.

Frame mounted fairings??... Well, I guess the Honda Goldwing will never take off! Those silly Honda Engineers, they've been screwing ridings up for 30years. If they only would have had "glwilson's" wisdom, they might have been able to sell a few of those "crappy" Goldwings. As far as the Road Glide fairing is concerned, it's a love'm or hate'm kinda thing... a H-D Dealer told me the Road Glide (frame mount) handled better (especially in the wind/ wind gust's), than the Ultra............................................. .................
P.S. doesn't "glwilson" stand for GL1000, GL1100, GL1200, GL1500, GL1800 ???

Ive never liked the dual lamp look of the Road Glide fairings, they just don't look right to me. Although guys say the bikes ride really good with them mounted.

I've ridden a Road Glide and a Voyager, both have fixed fairings. At first, it is a little odd turning the bars and the fairing doesn't turn with them. I think the ride is superior to a batwing fairing because the weight of the fairing and the pressure from the air hitting it is carried by the frame and not the front end. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

By the way, a lot of Harley owners consider the Road Glide the "ugly duckling" of the HD touring family.

Fairing with a different shape

As you can see Greg has a coping issues since he went to the other side!

Frame mounted fairings are more functional than handlebar fairings. Less weight on the handlebars makes turning much easier...

I use to have a GL1500 and I can tell you from my experience my Ultra tracks just fine in the wind compared to my old Goldwing.

I don't think it has anything to do with the fairing. I think it's because the Goldwing is so covered up, there's no place for any cross wind to to go.

Don't believe I deserved that comment mister... but if you care to make an issue of it... there's a lot of ugly cr@p out there that sells and has for years. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Maybe YOU do... but I don't ;)
