Then it hit me....

So I rode in today and proudly parked my ride in a place of well deserved prominence. Later I found myself day dreaming out the 3rd floor window and while gazing over that huge expanse of black asphalt furiously being pounded by the relentless rays of the Sun wishing I was out there and free of this self-imposed bondage to that drug called supporting the family....

...and it hit me.... How many have ever walked out to find their Nomad laying it's side with the kickstand stuck in the pavement, mud, loose gravel, etc ? Seems to me the stand has a pretty large 'footprint' but.....

(gotta run - evil paycheck waving overseer coming)

I carry several kickstand plates in my saddlebags just in case. That would suck to come out and find my bike like that.

Had a Yamaha Magnum 650 once. Rode it to work one day and when I went out to lunch, the kickstand was pretty deep in the asphalt, almost to the point of going over. Got there just in time!
I guess carrying a kickstand plate is probably a good idea.

Not on my Nomad but did such with my Honda Shadow 1100. I now carry a kickstand plate.

Hasn't happened to me yet. I carry a home made aluminum sidestand plate in my left saddlebag. I've seen guys pick up a flattened plastic water bottle or beer can and use those when parking on a grass parking spot. Works just as good as the stand plate.....just doesn't look as good.

I carry a piece of 1/4 inch plywood 4x6" in my side bag for if I have to park on questionable ground.

Learned my lesson many years ago with my Yamaha 650. It was a cool bike, and I was young and being cool. Pulled into the K Mart parking lot on a hot summer day, cruised the parking lot admiring all the sweet young things in short shorts, being cool. Man I am the coolest.

Park the bike and get about 10 feet away, turn around for one last look at my cool ride, just in time to watch the kickstand sink into the hot asphalt and over it goes.

So much for being really cool, and parking lot asphalt is a real bitch to get off hot pipes.

I carry a square junction box cover plate. I think it cost less than 50 cents at Home Depot.

I noticed that a couple of you wrote "I carry several kickstand plates" & "I always carry kick stand plates". Is there a reason to carry more than one? Do you sell them to others not so prepared? Do you use one and leave it behind? Do you have several kick stands? Do you stack them so the bike stands more upright?

I carry only one and like Yellow Jacket, I use a round cover plate from an electrical junction box, costs around $1.25. I wrapped it in orange hockey tape so it sticks out when lifting the side stand. Never have this motorcycle sink or tip, but having that experience many years ago I am always cautious where and how I park on a hot day. I need to be more careful in the driveway as the asphalt is softer than used in commercial areas.

I just about had that happen a few weeks ago. i went to the Lupine festival. A lupin is a alpine flower that grows here. On the way there is trained barrels, with a bit of hail. The ground was grass mush, and I used the plate i carry in my woman little black purse at the wind screen. I didn't place the plate well, evidently and it tipped up and kicked out and the side stand was headed to Davey Jone's Locker.

Next time i will take a little better care to see it is set up right.

For $2 each Iron Pony has some kickstand pads that work great and always have a couple with me offering them to others I ride with when needed. They also work great for the canoe stand :-)

The ground here is too hard. There's no grass to park on, either. I have a kickstand plate but have never used it. I guess if I was ever someplace muddy it might come in handy.

Hot asphalt or muddy yards can be a hazzard. It has never happened to me and I do have a metal plated just in case.
