The wheels of justice
Remember the story a few months back about the woman who was painting her nails while driving and killed a motorcyclist? Here's the latest from the Chicago Sun Times:
Nail-painting driver indicted Reckless homicide alleged September 17, 2009 News-Sun Staff Report The distracted driver who ran a red light and killed a Lake Zurich motorcyclist in June was indicted Wednesday on a charge of reckless homicide. Laura Hunt, 46, of Morris previously told investigators she was painting her nails at the time of the crash. Following the fatal June 5 accident, police charged her with failure to reduce speed. Lake County authorities said Hunt was traveling along Route 12 near Old McHenry Road, near Lake Zurich, when she struck Anita Zaffke, 56, throwing Zaffke from her bike. Zaffke, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, died shortly after being taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Lake Barrington. Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller said Zaffke suffered chest and abdominal injuries stemming from the collision. If convicted, Hunt faces up to five years in prison for the Class 3 felony.

The wheels of justice
I seriously doubt she will spend much if any time in jail given how the Chicago/Illinois jails are overcrowded.
The governor is threatening to let a bunch of prisoners go-free amid the state's financial crisis... so I assume the judges have received that message and will likely give her a large fine; long probation; and hours of community services duties. She may possibly get weekends in the county jail though for a year or so -- which would be better than no jail-time. But to know the truth... I see women putting on eye-makeup; painting their nails; and plenty of other stuff that distracts them from driving -- so evidently, no one has paid any attention to what has happened to this woman or worse yet... the biker's death.

With any luck, justice will be served and she will have plenty of time to do her nails in prison.

If she had been talking on a cell phone this would have received national attention, but since she was doing her nails, you didn't hear much about it.She needs to be punished, but I don't think much will come from it. It just doesn't have the political importance of other stories.

I was in my truck once waiting at a stop light. The movement to my left caught my attention.. the young "lady" in the left lane next to me is pulling on pantie hose. Has her right leg across the console into the passinger seat. The light changes green and off she goes, still tugging.
I had to watch her for the next three lights to make sure she got them on safely . |
