Help - Throttle Sticking - Slow to Return

My VN1600 throttle is very slow to return when I let go of it. It has Kuryakyn grips, but I'm not sure that has anything to do with the problem. Is there a certain spot that I need to look at and lube?

I do have a service manual. Will be diving into that shortly, but I was hoping somebody could give me a shortcut, 'cuz I wanna take a little ride!!

Help - Throttle Sticking - Slow to Return

Hi,
Does the bike have an aftermarket throttle lock ? If so remove it and see if it gets better. Maybe its set too tight ?
Make sure the end of the Kuryakyn grip is not touching the end of the handlebar inside the grip. Loosen the screws of the throttle assembly/starter button and move it off the handlebar slightly. See if the throttle returns quicker. Have you had the gas tank off and pinched the throttle cables ?

If all else fails you are going to have to lube the throttle cables.

More or less this is a garage topic, but i don't care.

Jus sayin'

Sounds like cables need some oil. The right way is to open the throttle grip clamps and feed oil into the cables, but the cheat is to flow some MM (Marvel Mystery) oil in the crack a few times and turn the grip. A few drops over a few days.

Other than MM works too, most any light oil.

Another cheat, but harder than the last, is to undo the throttle body ends of the cable and feed them oil backwards, holding these ends high.

The board police will nail him, Mac. :) But it is motorcycle related so that should be his alibi.

Help - Throttle Sticking - Slow to Return

Mucho grassyass compadres! I did take a look at the garage topics, and the list of topics seemed to be quite short - maybe something wrong with the forum software, or on my end. I also couldn't get a search to work. It kept timing out.

Anyway.....no throttle lock, and the grip was not touching the end of the handlebar. I performed an "RTFM" maneuver, had a "DUH" moment, removed the throttle grip clamps, removed the cable ends from the grip, put a little synthetic grease on the h-bar, and dribbled/worked some light oil into the cable, then went for a nice 75 miler through New Market, Frederick, Braddock Hts, over South Mountain to Boonsboro and back. Throttle is working nice and smooth now, and I didn't have to remove the throttle-body end.

I wasted an hour looking for a pressure cable lubricator - Tractor Supply, Ace and frickin' WallyWorld didn't have it, but I'm on the lookout for one now.

Thanks redjay and macmac.

Oh crap. I was hoping to avoid the attention of local Law Enforcement.

I just checked the garage board, and it's working fine. I SWEAR it was not working when I checked it this afternoon, Officer!

I was going to suggest to open up the box containing the starter button and kill switch but see that is what you did. I had a problem with my starter button and had to open mine up. While I was making sure the wires were tight and no corrosion I went ahead and put lubricant down each of the throttle cables. Wouldn't hurt to do that at least once a year, maybe every six months. Glad you have your problem worked out.

That board always works just fine, It ain't neva' been bent, spindled or mutilated , but search don't workkee too good since the liberals got to it.

While yer at it, you might just wanna lube the kick stand, and since you will be down there anyway the bell cranks on the almost hidden shifter linkage. Yes You Can lube that linkage and the pivot support thru the frame.

A hunk of 2x4 under the side stand helps.

As to the cops here, why they all pull donkey honkey, I call it hokey mung and boo, but then I am on probation all the time anyway.

Yeah, I want to give her a once-over before putting her to bed for the winter. Bike came with one of those fancy hoo-ha two-height shop-made work stands. It's sweet. I gotta get some pics up.

But I SWEAR the garage board was wonky earlier!
