2005 1600 High pitch whine

Started the bike today far from home and really far from any parts store. I just noticed a high pitch squeal in my air intake. Pulled off the filter cap and checked the filter, a little dirty, but not bad. Pulled off the air intake cap and there was a splash of oil at the bottom of the cap, and the intake and jets were clean. I've never heard the bike whine like this before, and the whine begins as soon as I start it.
1. Anybody out there come across this before.
2. Is it safe to ride for a few hours till I get home? Or should I hunker down here at the cottage till I get a new air filter ordered to the closest post office

Could be your fuel pump it will whine and it is really hard to tell where it's coming from, mine whined and I rode it for a few hundred miles before I bought a low mileage used one off of eBay and changed it out.

Thanks recumbentbob and 05nomader. Checked the vacuum lines and the leads the bike shop installed for the Fi2000 were the wrong type and weren't crimped properly.
