Yep, it's for real...
A couple of weeks ago during a staff meeting, the day after my employer announced that they did not meet their first quarter earnings projections, my manager was asking us for suggestions on how to cut costs. We worked on these plans and submitted them the following week. Yesterday, my manager was over here for meetings (he works at the corporate building several miles away) and he asked me and another guy on my team to step into an empty office for a quick chat. He said the cost-cutting proposal had been rejected, and now "people are involved". He said the two of us aren't affected, but one of our other team members was and he was going to be let go. So soon, there will be 3 of us doing the work instead of 4, which also means I will be on call every 3rd week. At least I get to keep my job, and I really feel bad for the poor guy that is getting axed. This company seems to pull the trigger very quickly. I hope it doesn't get pulled again. I've survived 8 rounds of layoffs here, most of them after the dot com bubble burst in 2002-2003.
I know there are others here who may be dealing with the same thing. Hopefully things will get better sooner, rather than later.

Stressful times for many. I have been on both sides of the desk...neither enjoys it or feels good about it.

Good luck Scott. I don't see things getting better for at least 9 months, the time it'll take for all the stimulus packages, etc. to kick in.

A long time ago, I think it was our second Christmas together after we were married, I got laid off on Christmas Eve. Can you imagine that? Ruins an otherwise happy time of the year.

I think EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE should ALWAYS be looking for their next job. I want my employer to know that if I get a better offer I'm out of there! They cut withoug much remorse and I'll bail to another company with the same philosophy. I just started a new job with the state and if in one year it's not what I WANT, I will start sending in the applications for a new one.
The biggest danger in these and most times is to just sit back and pretend your not on the chopping block! DON'T DO THAT EVER!!!

CJ;
Sorry to hear "this" is hitting that close-to-home for you. At this point; do your best to be "better-than-the-next-guy" to help avoid being the "next-guy" laid-off if it happens. Besides, America can use a few more people that want to be "better" for "being better's sake". Greg
