Rattling speedometer
I'll apologize in advance if this has been covered. I did a search and nothing came up. I'm sure this is a somewhat common problem to Nomads. My bike is a 99 and the chrome speedometer idiot light cluster/bezel is rattling against the fuel tank. As a temporary fix I split lengthwise a couple pieces of rubber fuel line about an inch long and slipped em over the seam at the front of the tank where it's hitting the bezel to stop it. It worked but looks cheesey. I'm sure there's a better way. I don't really want to grind on the speedomet bezel thingy if I don't have to.
Anybody got a suggestion? Thanks Dan

I think someone had this problem but it has been a while. I can't remember what their solution was. You might want to make some rubber gaskets and put the bolts through the gaskets and see if that helps. Wish I could offer more help but that is what I would do if mine did that. I wouldn't do any grinding if it could be avoided.

You may have to shim it up a bit with some rubber or nylon washers underneath the nacelle.
Your speedo assembly is a little different than ours with the electronic speedos.

There's only one bolt holding the whole works on and it's at the bottom/back of the nacelle. The front/top edge is held on via a 90 degree bent piece of metal tab inserted into a rubber gromet and slot. Since it's rubbing at the front the only thing I could see to do would be to try and bend that metal tab so it's not so close to the tank.
It probably won't take a whole lot to clearance it. Yep you're right there too CJ don't want to grind on anything if it can be avoided. Here's where I put the split fuel line. One on either side. It quieted it right down so that's where the problem is. It just looks bad.

Here's the tab that inserts into the slot. That's it. This tab and 1- 8 mm bolt holding the whole works on.

Now that I see the problem, I think your right in bending the tab a bit, or replacing the grommets, they are probably worn. You may also be able to put some silicone adhesive on the grommets also to fix the problem.

The hole in the rubber grommet probably has worn over time ,so here's a thought. You could cut and stick a small piece of two way tape to the bottom of the tab as a shim to raise it up. Just don't peel off the backing ( leave it sticky one side only ). I'm talking about the good stuff you can get from most auto supply stores. It sticks like gang busters and comes in varying thicknesses. 1-2 pieces of 1/8in thick would probably do.

Replace rubber grommet as suggested and get some chrome (vinyl) U channel door edge trim and apply around the edge of the bezel (meter cover). The U channel will isolate vibration between the bezel and tank and also give the bezel a clean finished look.

I had the rattling speedo on the 99'. I ordered all new rubber for it and installed; it abated. As a temporary fix I shimmed using washers to hold the instrument to the bezel. It could vibrate and the gasket between the instrument and bezel was shot and it squeeked like crazy.
