Water pump rebuild

I had been smelling anti freeze for a long time and couldn't find a leak any where except every now and then I would get a little drip from the hose coming from the water pump. Since I am planing on riding to Maggie Valley I decided it was time to rebuild the water pump, if the bearing is OK then rebuilding the water is no big deal all you have to do is replace the Mechanical Seal and the Impeller and a new gasket. You can get them from Riders choice racing for around $50.00 with free shipping.

If you have a little leak I would suggest you rebuild the water pump because even though the bearing is sealed if Anti freeze gets in the bearing it can cause rust and lock up the bearing then you have a fun job.

Water pump rebuild

OB (Jim) pump drive shaft comes out of engine bottom end, thru oil bath bearing, then oil seal both in engine case. Then the cavity that hose is hooked to then thru a anti freeze seal in pump case.
Oil in the cavity means replace engine oil seal. Antifreeze there means replace waterpump shaft seal

There's no reason to replace or rebuild the pump, mess with the impellor or any thing like that. The antifreeze side seal is replaceable and unless you find that the shaft surface is damaged that is all that is nesc.

If the shaft surface is grooved, pited or otherwise damaged then you have a big problem. Replacing the shaft requires spliting the engine cases which means the motor needs to come out of the fram.

Water pump rebuild

A drop now and then is no big deal. As long as it isn't a constant.

Like Ross said you can't rebuild it with out pulling the front jug off.

As long as the oil seal and the bearing is OK you can and I did replace the Mechanical Seal and the impeller which has the seal that mates with the Mechanical Seal Here are some pictures. I didn't take any these were taken by piddlin.

With some high flauting BS you can replace the engine oil seal too. You don't want to drive that seal into the engine though, and you are driving in a new seal bass akwards.

If the shaft is pooched, then the engine has to be taken down so far as will get out the cog and shaft. That's something I hope I never get to do. If I do I will replace the chain drive too.

OB I hope you cleaned out that space between the oil seal and the mechanical seal pretty well. Mostly to prevent alloy corrosion.

No he didn't, but he found a Gadjet like series of 'how to do', that infact does do this. That series is still on line, but I don't have the skills to import it to here, and I don't need any trouble with Trip, so I guess all I can do is accept PM's and pass the link that way. I have no idea who owns the copy write if anyone does at all.

Since I ain't King, there is things in life I can't fix.

That link is here on the forum somewhere, posted back when Cadd was a member here. You need to be a search pro to find it, its back 2-3 years ago.

Ponch I missed the link, and it sure is the right info, but the last line says

"I'd like to give credit to fellow Nomad rider Mike Donahue, who sent me these instructions. Unfortunately he could not recall where he got them, but perhaps someday that fellow will show up here and get credit for his clever time and money-saving idea."

I an 100% sure that isn't Cad's bike. Hell thar's plants growin on the engien case, He doesn't keep his bike like that! Just his cages grow plants. Really they do. I was at his place 19 days.
