Speed-o help, erratic / 2001 / 1500 carb

It all started out being an intermittent squealing noise,
od. still works and speed -o still works my readings are way out of wack, it was showing 120 mph the other day on the interstate, i was doing more like 70mph just keeping up with traffic, I just replaced the RECEIVER-SPEEDOMETER more of the same thing, I have a feeling that the problem may be the CASE-ASSY-METER GEAR.

has any of you dealt with this issue or may have installed something wrong?

Is this cable drive or electric?

I have never seen a 01 with a carb, or any Nad with a carb for that matter. I had a 01 injected and it had electrical speedo. That wasn't likely to make anoise and do what yours is, but I guess it could. Once I saw a volvo with electrical speedo tear off miles when the engine wasn't running. It didn't make any noises though.

IF there is a cable drive from the ft wheel I would be all over the gear there. If you find it's good, then pull the speedo head and slip the cable out. If the cable is frizzed it's dead. If not lube it well with a light grease mixed with marvel mystery oil.

I'm with you on that Mac. Take it apart and give it a good greasing. Might just be that all the grease has worn off and is dry. I had an '88 Oldsmobile Cutlass Classic and the speedometer started doing that. At the time I had abut 150,000 miles on the car. Eventually the odometer quit but I guess by this time I had put nearly a quarter million miles on it. Never had a bike to do that though.

Speed-o help, erratic / 2001 / 1500 carb

I have a 2000 carbed 1500. I replaced my speedometer assembly at 57,000 because it was erratic. I also replaced the cable. I even tore the head assembly apart to find the problem but it has so many little parts and is sensitive so I just ordered a new one. I would take the cable out clean and re-lubricate it first. Worse case you can buy a new head but they are expensive. Mine started by the needle jumping back and forth and sometimes it wouldn't work at all. The piece the cable screws to in the head was loose and started coming out of the housing was the problem. They say never turn the assembly upside down if you take it off the bike. I had done that before so maybe that was the cause of my problem.

Speed-o help, erratic / 2001 / 1500 carb

I have found when the needle starts jumping around that the cable needs greasing, if it has been neglected for a while, and allowed to jump around that usually it ends up damaging the speedo.
