Pull The Key Out.....

Hello fellow vulcan riders. Was at the gas station the other day and a guy pulled up on his 2011 Vulcan Nomad just like mine. I was talking to him looking the bike over and noticed he had alot of keys on his key ring that were scratching the heck outta the plastic chrome around the ignition and speedo housing. So I told him that you can pull the key out when the ignition is in the run position. He didnt believe me so he started the bike and pulled the key out, problem fixed If you didnt know that next time you go ride if you dont want the keys scratching everything up just pull the key out after its been started and throw them in your pocket. You can still turn the ignition off by hand even though the key is not in the ignition. Anybody know any other fun facts about the bikes that others may not know?

Ride Safe,

Eric

RTFM: Read The Fabulous Manual or sometimes F stands for something else...

The following tip is for 1600 owners:

Unlike the 1700s, the 1600s' ignition switch has 3 distinct positions:

1: off
2: on
3: power on to accessories

If you want to turn the power off completely but don't want to re-insert the key which is probably in your pocket, turn the switch to 1.5 position or until the power is OFF but the switch is not all the way to left. From that position you can go to Position 2 without needing the key.

This tip is handy when you stop to take pictures or when you are at a border crossing where they ask you to shut off your engine and they can take their time asking so many questions....

Needless to say, don't shut off your bike like that and walk away

I always remove my key after turning the bike to the ON position. Often, I only turn it off only as far as the ACC position so I can turn it back on without the key. Even so, my plastic chrome is all scratched up. Oh well, it's really not even noticeable.

I never use the kill switch "on purpose". Sometimes I accidentally hit it when I get off the bike and then I have a wtf moment when it doesn't start right up. But it doesn't happen often.

I have my key on a separate ring with a rubber fob. No scratches.

I thought you were talking to me....

I rode to work the other day and had a co-worker come by and start a conversation while I was dismounting. I took off the jacket, stowed my helmet and gloves, took the laptop out of my saddlebag and followed him into work. 5:30 rolls around and I'm walking out to my bike, but I can't find the key. When I get to the bike I notice it is still in the ignition. Thing is, I don't think anybody noticed. That sort of thing would get me endless grief around here.

So yeah, Pull the key out....

I have my key on a quick release ring.
The only thing in the ignition is the ignition key.
All my other keys go back in my pocket.

My dumb move was to leave the key in the saddlebag a couple of times. Lucky me, it is a monitored limited-access parking lot. Otherwise, I'd have a bunch of 'splainin to do!

I cut the head off my key and epoxied it into a cool looking Nut cover. I only take it out if I think someone might figure it out. I do the same with the gas cap. Looks like bling. I also modified the saddle bag lock with a small file so the key can be removed when they are unlocked. Very convenient.

I got totally used to pulling out the key after turning the bikes (Nomad and Voyager) on. On my new Victory, the ignition is on the left side and you cannot remove the key. As a result, after shutting off the bike, I have walked away from it forgetting to grab the damn thing. I am trying to get in the habit of pulling it out the very second I turn off the bike. I really liked the keyless option....

Victory has several Keyless options that are as secure or more secure than the key.

Weird... I live in a very rural area so when I ride "into town" I never take the key out. Come to think of it, I never take the key out of the bike at all except to access the saddlebags and gas tank. I really like the idea of cutting the head off and adding a cover so it looks like it is just a piece of chrome though. The rural exception though is you ALWAYS take the key out of your 4 wheeler and lawn tractor. I have to guard those things out here, but the bike is pretty safe! Go figure....
