The tour is nice. Start off by looking at some relics from when the the business first started in the 1800's. You then move on to a little theater where you see a 10 minute video on the history of the Tobasco business including the pepper planting, picking, processing, and 3 year aging in oak barrels covered with salt from the mine. We then toured the bottling plant. It was my second trip. We will go back in the spring when the egrets are hatching their young. It's only a little over an hour from my home. The 5 salt dome islands are fascinating places. You can visit Jefferson, Avery, and Weeks Islands by driving onto the islands. Cote Blanche (French for White Coast) and Belle Isle are not accesible to the public. Both are teaming with wild game including hogs, Louisiana Black Bear, deer, etc. Belle Isle is the site of two mining disasters in the 1968 where 21 salt miners died in an underground fire and again in the mid 70's when an outburst of sand and methane resulted in an underground explosion killing 5 more miners. The mine was intentionally flooded and abandoned a couple of years later. It is now private land with a hunting club that only allows bow hunting of deer. Avery, Cote Blanche, and Weeks Islands are still producing salt. If ever you are down here, the islands are well worth visiting. Jefferson Island has the old servant quarters which were converted to Bed and Breakfast cottages. We plan on spending a couple of nights early in the upcoming spring.

Today was the put-away ride. Had a little time to get in a ride while we had some 60 degree temps - a pretty nice day for Minnesota in mid-November.

Mr Nomad is now parked in heated storage for the winter.

Time to start planning rides for 2012!

A friend and I got about 6.5 hours in the saddle on Saturday with temps in the mid 60's at times. Also got about 2 hours in yesterday. Did some riding in western Wisconsin on roads that we hadn't been on in a long time. Hills and twisties are the greatest. I plan on riding until we have a weather forecast that has a lot of snow in it.

Rode the Nomad to pay a bill and stop by Wal-Mart, total miles was only 5. It was 46 degrees and sort of a chilly ride.

Marie and I rode to Julian today for some of their world's famous pie. Was 40 degrees and misty and cold! On the way back we were first on the scene of a deer vs. car. the deer was still moving in the middle of the road and the front of the car was toast. Driver and passenger were ok.

That car had 5 air bags all deployed. It couldn't have happened 30 seconds before we got there as fluid had just started pouring from the front end of the car. Kind of a sad scene to see that large buck in the middle of the road suffering. Not much we could do... At first I thought of grabbing it by the antlers and dragging it off the road so it could die in peace but then thought better of it.

That thing could be in shock and kick the shit out of me if I tried to help... anyway 271 mile RT for the day.. Cold windy and very cloudy with sprinkles all day..

We stop here for deer that have collisions with cars also, but its to see if we can claim the deer.We don't really care about the car. Usually there will be three or four people stop within a minute or two asking for the deer.

Sounds like you had a good day! I thought I was the only one crazy enough to ride on a 40 deg day. It was 60% chance of rain/snow here but the sun peeked out and I got a nice ride in, just not as far. Gotta keep the battery charged! And the pie will keep us charged

About 2 weeks ago two cars ahead of me hit a deer and it was after dark so I couldn't see where the deer was... the car ahead of me swerved to the right so I went that way too and got around the deer ok.

Some buddies from work and I rode down to Tucson to eat lunch at a Mexican restaurant featured on Man v Food on the Travel Channel. President Clinton dined there in 1999. The food was outstanding!

It was about a 230 mile round trip, but unbeknownst to us, there was a huge bicycle race in Tucson (Tour de Tucson) today and we ended up stuck in traffic waiting for the police to let us through several times. At least it wasn't 110 degrees today. There are only two main routes into Tucson from the North - I-10 and Hwy 77. They closed 77 and we had to wait 40 minutes to get past the road block. Everywhere we went, we were held up by that damned race.

Driving in Tucson is difficult on a good day because they don't have the modern infrastructure Phoenix has. Narrow roads, only the I-10 freeway which skirts the west side of town and then heads east to NM along the south side. This is a metro area of over 1 million people, too.

It was overcast most of the day, temps in the 60's. Very nice. I'll post some pics later.

Here we are taking a break about 65 miles south of Chandler. In the first pic, that monument in front of the bikes is a memorial to western film star Tom Mix, who died there when he rolled his Stutz-Bearcat on Hwy 79 in 1940. The third picture is proof we ride with anybody.

Rode down to Mulhall , OK to eat at Lucille's. One of the best home mode menus around. After everyone had their fill, rode on over to Stillwater, then headed home. By then the wind had changed to teh north and the cold front had come through. Good ride though.

Which restaurant was it? I saw that episode recently and the only one that sticks out was the hot dog place.
