Yeah I doubt it is a crank seal Steve as it started up and idled quite well on both cylinders after new plugs, dumping in a half bottle of isypropl and being in the garage for a few hours. The jets I was running in that machine were the stock size and the needles have never been moved from the stock postion either. Never had a lean issue with that setup even in the coldest of weather, so I imagine if it is still lean, It may be sucking air some where or I may have some water in the fuel freezing up.
I will be keeping a close eye on it and pull the plugs often for the first little while.

It may have been the carb boots, they dont have to be cracked all the way through to become porous, Although Ive never seen that problem cause a motor with stock jets to burn down. Check the carb flanges as well, Ive seen many of them crack over time.

They are mikunis, so the carb boots are the intake flanges. Did you think by boots I meant the rubber connectors from carbs to the air box?

Thats what I meant Norm, The carb flanges are the important ones to check or replace.

Interesting problem Norm. I used to race two strokes and like all gas/oil burning engines never melted a piston. Seized a few however. Blown crank seals would be noticeable by a loss of power. Melting a piston without noticing anything funny with the way the engine was running prior is confusing. It takes a long time of running hard to melt the piston. Seizing on the other hand had happening instantly withing 1 minute of running hard by the piston growing (expanding) too fast in the bore.

Norm had you been running the engine hard for a good while? you'd need temps over 1300 degrees for quite a few minutes before aluminum starts to melt. Can you give me more info as to the ride and when the piston crapped out on you?

Hey Brad, Thanks for the input. So what were you racing dirt or track ? Running lean and burning up a piston is not all that uncommon in a snowmobile although it is the first time I have done it. Certainly more common than in a 2cycle outboard or 2 cycle bike. I believe one of the reasons is the large ambient temp range they operate in. The colder it is out the leaner they run and so it is my understanding that most manufactures sell their machines with richer main jets by one or two sizes so they won't burn up when the temp gets really cold. This makes them real doggy on the warmer days. We were always changing main jets to suit the day when I messed around racing them. Anyway couple the running leaner as the temp drops with gummed up main jets from storage and not cleaning and you can melt a hole on the piston real quick. As I said to Steve I think mine might have been due to ice restricting the fuel either before or in the bowls thems selves. These machines are oil injected directly to the main bearings and into the carbs after the throttle plates, so lean does not effect lubrication. I wasn't running that hard, maybe about 1/2 throttle for 5 minutes across a lake and another 10 minutes down a packed down trail, less than 1/2 throttle. They always run real nice and seem to have lots of zip just before they blow is a fairly true statement and that is how mine went

Just received all the parts today. Pistons, rings, wrist pins, gasket set and carb boots. I hope to work on it and have it back up and running on Saturday.

Thursday - high 70, 30 % chance of rain
Friday - high 73, 50% chance of rain
Saturday - high 74, 30 % chance of rain and finally
SUNDAY!! - high of 77 with only 20 % chance!

I was able to ride about 110 miles yesterday after work but the deer on the side of the road just freaked me out too much. Had to park it. They are all over the area I live in. Hope to ride both Saturday and Sunday for several (daylight) hours!

Why is it that when I am in the woods with my 30-06 for 4 hours I only see foxes and squirrels but the minute I get on my bike the deer come out to hitch hike?
