Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

I can't explain the low mileage for the stock stones as some have said but my stock rear stone was changed to a car tire at 10,890 miles and was still legal barely. I could've pushed it to 12.5k but custer is coming so on went the car tire....

Brad:

You've probably already answered this 9,000 times, but did you mount the tire to the rim yourself or have a shop do it?

My local motorcycle shop did it and I was kind of surprised! I took the tire and rim in myself and talked to the shop manager and he said he would have fun doing it! He didn't think it would fit back on my bike because it was way taller than stock. He balanced it too, all for $19 bucks..

I'm at 9,500 miles on mine and it's time to mount the Cobra. I could get another 1,000 on it but why risk it. 10,000 riding 2 up 90% of the time doesn't sound very bad for a stock Bridgestone. The front looks like it will hold out until after Custer. Plenty of tread left.

He claims he doesn't think this would have happened with a car tire. I don't necasarily agree with that- car tires can blow/explode, etc., too. Nonetheless, I would imagine it was an interesting experience.

I had a flat on my rear tire while riding. I was going about 75 in the fast lane on I-45 in bumper to bumper traffic (rush hour). I had very little warning that the tire was going. The bike started feeling a little squirrelly, but there was so much buffetting from the truck in front of me that I didn't know I had a tire problem. Then all of a sudden, it was like I threw on the brakes. I guess when the tire blows up, it starts rubbing on the swing arm and driveshaft. The bike went pretty much straight, but was weaving back and forth. Everyone gave me enough room that I could get over to the slow lane and onto the shoulder. It was pretty exciting for a few moments. The rear tire was destroyed like in the picture in the first post. I guess I ran over something that punctured the tire. I started using Ride On tire sealant after that, but haven't used it in the rear since I got the car tire. I still use it in the front tire. I feel that the car tire will be more resistant to punctures, but don't know.

The touring forums say Slime corrodes aluminum rims and is not recommended for tire sealant and balancing. Ride On and one other brand, that I can't remember, are both highly recommended.

You're likely correct on the car tire being more resistant to punctures, etc., pablo.

Ok, I'm seriously thinking of the Darkside. Two questions:

1. Where can you get them mounted?
2. What size/brand is best to use for a 1500? Stock tire size is 150/80-16

go to the delphi "darkside" forum and do some research there CoachA . im not sure about the 1500 seems there was some talk about very limited tires for that. as far as mounting goes alot of us have mounted our own. you may be able to find a shop that will do it.

Coach....here's a link to a few known CT installers. Not sure how often its updated. Probably worth a phone call to make sure they still install ct's.

Dick, Cool web site, alot of great info! Coach, was looking at site and there was a couple of guys with 1500's on there, running 195/60 or 65-16's, your on your own as far as brand, on that site there was a few tires they said not to try because they exploded during installation? Don't know about that. If you can't find anybody to help, I'll be glad to help, couldn't find anyone to do mine so I bought my own tire changer and use DynaBeads. Just let Mrs.coach carry it up with you on the way to Custer and we'll change it then. (don't tell I said that, HEHE)
