well I'm back from the west coast. got my engine back in the frame. so far, cost me 160 for the head, and 200$ for my mechanic to replace it. today, started the fun task of putting parts back on it. i'll keep you posted.

ASAP, before the engine is started, maybe before it is back in the frame, pull a plug per cly and turn the engine over BY HAND, making sure it will turn more than 2 full rev... If it locks up STOP, Then reverse the direction, and see if it locks again. If it does take it back to the tech. If he is any good at all it won't lock, but I have seen this be a big problem in the past on all sorts of engines.

Once on my trip I worked on a BMW bike that has already crashed the engine this way. I wasn't aware so much, and reset the chain timing, and was able to run a 2 banger on one..

Then someone in the club lent me a comp tester and it registered a big fat 0. I told the owner who had done the valve work, what was wrong, what he did wrong, and so after I was long gone he was able to fix it again, right this time.

I suppose that sucked, but the fix was worth it in the long run.

To do this make the engine stable, use the driveshaft and pad it up well. With no plugs a vise grip or small stinson 'pipe wrench' should turn it real easy. Turn it slow in 5th gear. Probably from the rear turning the shaft counter clock wise is the most correct way. Probably the engine turns the shaft clock wise.

Apx 6 drops of engine oil in the plug holes might be nice too.

Sarc, like Mac said, make sure the engine has been "timed" correctly before you try to start it, and good luck Bro with the re-assembly................. spring is just around the corner.

it looks good, I was able to turn the engine with plugs out. air was coming out and no resistance. I'm about half way there.

Panic attack no more. she's back to life. started the engine today. I put the mufflers on temporarilly in order to fire it up to ensure she's running fine. turned the key 3-4 time to let the fuel pump do its job and on the first crank she started. what a relief. I let her run for a few minutes, no leaks (so far), the rad fan started, the coolant is flowing, she all looks and sound good.
I just wanna thank all of those who provided very usefull advice. especially macmac for his knowlege and vulcanE for finding the head for me. you saved me a bundle and if you're ever in Nova Scotia, Canada, come in the Annapolis Valley and look me up for a couple brewskis...

now I just have to put the rest of her back together and wait for the snow to clear and go for a test ride.

cheers

Used to be good stuff...untill they changed the formula a coule years back. The newer stuff is not worth $hit. IMO The older jb weld would serve to actuall patch a hole in the side of an engine block, but not the newer stuff.

It's good to hear you got by so 'cheap', and like you say macmac and VulcanE will give you some of the best advise on this forum. I pays to read their posts, and heed their advise. Kudos to them both. ;)
