Another leak??? CRAP!!!!

well crap!. One shop says they won't do just the seals on the final drive, stating some sort of safety issue if something goes wrong after I put it back on. I called the other dealer and they quoted me $180 plus cost of the seals. I'm taking it there later today.

The safety issue is that if they don't clean the shims (which can be very thin and flimsy, and so tedious to clean properly) and clean the mating surfaces thoroughly and surgically clean, it can cause the thing to leak and the gears to mesh incorrectly when the box is reassembled.

If any of those things happen you *might* have a gear box failure and hurt yourself in a crash, assuming you're too stupid to quit riding the thing when the gears start clunking and grinding and there's oil running all over your rear tire. Of course they always want to assume you're too stupid if doing so means they get to charge you for more parts and labor.

At least that's my theory.

They said if the final drive locks up or leaks, or I install it incorrectly, then it's on them. Even if they did do the whole job, there's no 100% gaurantee they did it correctly. I only see one way to put this thing back on.....reverse of how it comes off. I'm no mechanical genius, but this isn't THAT hard! I can't see how I wouldn't put it on right. The other shop said they would replace the seals, no problem. I just can't justify the first shop doing ALL the work, if I can do most of it myself. If the second shop can replace seals and put it back together correctly, then I should be good to go. I can piece the bike together.

Well if they change the seals and it leaks, yeah it's on them. If you install it incorrectly it's on you. If it locks up and you installed it correctly, they'll still say you installed it incorrectly, and it's still on you. They just see an opportunity to make more money on a job by dicking you around IMO.
