Well you can do the hearing test with the rod like I said. The only reason i say so is it might be cam chains hack sawing thru the plug wells on lt ft and rt rr.
That area is high in the engine, and it might be the metal you found was from there. Do not run the engine long and watch for that red light to come on. If the engine is toast it just is and you will need another one. If it is timing chains you will need new plug tubes and timing chain extenders, and you will also need to know that POG isn't broken and has been replaced in steel. I can't take any responsibility if you follow my advice. Like i said I think you bought a bike from someone who knew that gear was broke. Running a engine a few moments with no oil pressure will raise hell.

Did you check to see if there is a plastic oil gear? If it hasn't been changed to a steel gear, that is still a serious issue for you.

Retime the engine, once you do that there may not be a problem. If there is damage already done you can either fix it or reoplace the motor with a used one, They can be found on Ebay.

Am I missing something here from a previous post or something? Is it just the chains stretched and rubbing on the spark plug tubes, or has a chain jumped a tooth and now the the valve timing is off and maybe a valve hitting a piston?

I would first try a set of extenders for the tensioners. If all it needs is timing chain tensioner extenders, and spark plug tunnels, that can be done with the engine in the bike.
If it has jumped a tooth or two,re-time the engine and go from there, but to time the engine, your probably going to have to pull it out of the frame.

There is no way to get the valve covers off to time the engine in the frame period.
However timing can still be checked with the engine in the frame. The left engine cover must come off and so does the shifters and the floor boards to get to the crank case timing plug to see the F and R marks. Both spark plug tubes will need to be removed to see the cam gear marks. Spark plugs need to be out so the engine can be turned BY HAND from the left side as seated counter clockwise only! CNC's questions should be answered.

Not to add insult to injury here, but did you test ride this bike before you bought it? Did you even hear it run?
