Oil Change Interval??????????????

<<<Thats 2100 miles on the oil and it looked black. When I say black, I mean black as coal, black as midnight on a moonless night>>>

TC, I used to own and ride a Honda Magna, 750, V-4. I'd change the oil and after about 3500 miles, I'd change it again and it would come out the same color as the day I put it in.

With a twin, that's a different story. Your oil actually turned black after about 30 miles after you changed it. Why? Carbon and other impurities in the oil that come from the use of a twin. The oil is doing it's job if it's black. All you have to do is ride and relax.

Oil Change Interval??????????????

Wellllll................. sort of but I don't want it to look like I'm usurping our #1 God!! The V-Twin part about being harding on oil is well.........not exactly.............

The #1 reason some oil come out black immediately is from how fast your motor gets hot. the color change is just that, color change only. It all depends on the base stock of the oil.

In theory whatever the possibility of a V-Twin having more impurities (less parts in a V-Twin would indicate less things to wear and get dumped into the oil) would be overcome by the substantially lower RPM's V-Twins run at.

Ring "blow by" is really the only impurity that can leak down into the motoroil contaminating it. 15,000 PRM's is much harder on oil. Much harder. And they have 4 sets of rings and pistons to wear down.

synthetics have a habbit? of turning black from temps immediatley but when left to cool, revert back to their more golden color. Black is black.

That's alright BD.....I don't look at it that way. If you want to disagree, that's certainly your right. It's HOW a person disagrees that sticks in my book. No retribution here. A difference of opinions is what drives success sometimes.

The explanation that I gave TC was one that I got from the message board at www.vroc.org several years ago. I asked that very question...."Why is my oil black right after changing it and is black oil normal?" and that's the answer I got.

I didn't mean to say that the twin engine is hard on oil, it's just that the oil gets black from cleaning carbon and other deposits in a twin. This is what was explained to me. I also asked what brand of oil to use....I wouldn't suggest asking that... You'll get as many brands suggested as there are users, but the one that did stand out was Mobile 1, synthetic, so that's why I use it.

The blush of the crude is not the trepidation. It is the viscosity and the uniformity of it’s acquiescence.
Therefore, the imperative entity is the facility to maintain unremitting lubricating execution.

Oil Change Interval??????????????

"cleaning carbon and other deposits in a twin. This is what was explained to me."

No problem our most fearless leader! Remember the old computer addage, "garbage in....yada yada?

When you have a brand new engine and put oil inside, what is it cleaning? Actually you change it quickly because some left over gasket material or machining bits and pieces might be floating around. But realistically 99.999% should have been trapped in the filter.

If I were to ask you if you took apart an engine and tell me before hand what will be the "dirtiest part?" If you said the piston crown you would be 100% correct! 5 extra starts!

After about 50K on an engine, most when torn down have enough carbon on the piston crown to be able to scrape some off with your fingernail. Now, if you were to dump all of it in your engine and start it up it would cause no problems whatsoever because your engine oil can "support" a lot of this type of "dirt".

The miniscule (good discription of Nico's new arms) amount of carbon that "leaks" past the piston ring end gaps into the bottom of the crankcase can be classified as very insignificant.

Remember your engine is really sealed up tight so the only and I can't stress it enough, only dirt to get in your engine that is carbon based is by the rings. Nowhere else, nada, zilch.

No carbon is created in the gears, the upper valve train, clutch pack and connecting rods or anywhere else.

The carbon contaminating the oil turning it black is just from not knowing and not having the experience first hand. Remember I'm an old gear head with 20 years of drag racing motorcycles, desert bikes (still have a highly modified XR 600R) and blowing them up and tearing them down I would guess past 100 times at least!

The only oil problem I could see is from an oil that has a low heat threshold. That problem would be with the oil which is sprayed at the underneath side of the piston. This is more of a "cooling" spray than anything. this is the biggest benefit of synthetics. Non premium oil can actually "cook" under the pistion causing the famous "sludge" build up.

Synthetics never have this problem because some of them can handle heat so high the piston (aluminum melts at about 1300 degrees F) will be toast before the oil "cooks". This is why I run synthetic oil in my engine.

Cleaning carbon inside your engine can't be because carbon develops only on the piston crown.

Nice BD. So if I run Synthetic or even dino for that matter why can't I follow the recommended oil change interval. It seems like every 3000 is a little escessive isn't it?

Oil Change Interval??????????????

Excessive yea, but if it makes your mind at ease, do it. I know some who only change the oil filter and add the difference back into their motors with synthetics and have done this for years! I would be uncomfortable doing it but since I've witnesses it first hand I feel good that if I delayed an oil change before a major treck I wouldn't worry in the least!
