The clunk on the 1700's is only between 1st and
2nd.

Actually mine just clicks into first, and clunks going from first to second, but I learned to appreciate it as a sound that indicates it is working.

I, as well as most of you have the clunk from neutral to 1st and then to 2nd. Thats it. I found that if I (while in neutral) lift up on the shifter as to go to 2nd and then put it in 1st, its like cutting butter. But the clunk doesnt really bother me because I know its the way the gears are cut and the physical size of them. Almost bullet proof.
If you really want a quieter shifting ride, get an inline goldwing cough; cough

Actually, thats exactly what I've done this summer. I've ridden all over the region and I installed a Kenwood stereo with 4 speakers and now I don't even notice the 'clunk.' Have a lot of friends in law enforcement by the way, most are really good guys. You be careful out there.

I agree, there is nothing wrong with the clunk, it is not a sign of defect or poor design.

have found on the 1600 that if you rest your heel on the shifter you can feel it pump up (pre-Load) and when it stops you change the clunk does not seem as loud
