The bevel gear is on the left side at the rear of the engine. The input to the bevel gear is the output shaft from the transmission. The output of the bevel gear is the shaft that the drive shaft connects to.

There are 2 bearings n the bevel gear drive, but 99.9999% of the time it's the bearing right behind the inspection cover. When they go bad they don't really wreck the engine. It's a simple enough fix, but MaKaw doesn't sell that individual bearing. You have to get one from a bearing supplier. Here in the states it was about $13 the last time I did one. MT

The one that usually goes bad is available from MaKaw. The part number is 92045-1165.
The one that they don't sell individually is pressed onto the driven gear. If that one is bad, very rare, just use a bearing separator to remove it, then take it to a bearing distributor and they can match it. As far as the 92045-1165 goes, take it or the number on the bearing itself to the bearing distributor and save half or better off the price. And they will have it in stock. MT

Front Bevel Gear Project Successful!
Helloi All,
I am new to this forum and actually ride a Vulcan 1600 Classic, but the information I needed came across in this forum for "Baggers." My post here is to say thank you to all who have posted very valuable information on the front bevel gear bearing issue! So, my Classic has 45k miles and I recently began noticing the tell-tale sounds that are commonly associated with this problem. So, as a police detective, I "research" and "investigate" and it is here that I found the information that I would use to repair this myself. Basically, all of the information posted turns out to be right on! Using the instructions found in here and in the service manual, I took my time in disassembling the components necessary to get the front bevel gear case off, and in the process, found that the u-joint on the drive shaft was seized, so I actually had 2 problems which may have been related to each other. I took the gear box to a Kawasaki dealer where one of the owners is a former co-worker of mine and the service manager there and I had him rebuild the gear box for me and I ordered a drive shaft off of ebay for $20. (Kawasaki wants $411 for a drive shaft and says the u-joint is not serviceable). During this process, I took the time to flush and change all fluids, changed brakes, cleaned all sorts of stuff not normally accessible, and she's got new tires, too! Put it all back together just the way it came apart (no parts left over!) Went for a ride and all is smooth as silk! All in all it was a success and the bike is ready to do another 45k! So again, a sincere thank you to all of you who contributed information on this issue that truly helped me do this on my own and I saved a HUGE chunk of money in labor costs and I learned a tremendous amount about my motorcycle in the process. Y'all ride safe! Chris. |

We know the effect, whats the cause.
Recently changed out the Bevel Gear Bearing beneath the removable cap. The preloaded assy felt good so I reinstalled it. The whining is back when decelerating in any gear. Do we know what causes this? Do we know what causes the bearing to go bad? I ordered the same bearing from my distributor and it came in as a Koyo bearing 6035c2. From what I am reading it could be an inferior bearing? Apparently this is not the first time this has happened to this bike as the case the bearing goes into was torn up previously from the gear rubbing on the inside of the case. Anyway I will be tearing this down again. I bought a used Bevel Gear Case from a parts house and it appears to be new. Will be replacing the bearing again with a new "upscale" bearing, a new drive shaft support bearing (that's what I'm calling it) new shims (engineering spacers)etc etc. Now since I have it open, what about the bearing behind the cam damper? (92045B)
Has anyone removed this bearing, if so how? As long as I have the case off I might as well do all that I can! I'm sick of the noise and want to get this right this time! Your comments are appreciated! Michael B |

Why did that particular bearing get upgraded to a C2 style bearing? The original bearing placed in that housing was a standard bearing NOT a C2! |
