I will admit that there are some "facts" that I have picked up and believe them to be true without any personal knowledge of that particular topic. One such 'fact' was that we only needed to install a new ECM if we opened up both the intake and exhaust on our bikes. If some guys are getting by without them or with them zeroed out then that "fact" that I picked up must be wrong. Perhaps it is because a TPS is set a little on the rich side. Who knows? One thing seems to be true, we have all been bitten by rules of thumb. That is why we need out ever trusted, apparently overworked and getting short tempered and slightly frazzled, CME. Maybe we could send him beer coupons to make him happy again? I digress. Hijacked my own post. Not sure what to think about the intake/exhaust mod now. Sure as h*ll don't want to burn a hole in a piston. I would think that you would notice that was a possibility when you cooked your jeans to the side of your legs. So, where are we? PCIII aka ECM needed or not?

The Gospel according to Blowndodge:
Remember when I wrote about a pinging issue and explained how to splice a 1k resistor into the wire that runs to the air temp sensor? Do any of you know why I would do such a scary task?? It is an attempt to "fool" the air temp sensor into thinking the ambient air is colder than it actually is and thereby increasing fuel flow or "richening" the air/fuel mixture. Ring a bell? If you recall, the air temp sensor is located underneath the right side chrome cover that hides the fuel injection throttle bodies. That air temp sensor picks up its signal from the air that is coming from the other side through that plastice crossover tube that connects both chrome covers left to right. The air coming through the actuall air cleaner element and running between the to cylinders through the crossover tube is very heated. This heated air then enters the left side (fuel injection) and passes over the air temp sensor. This in turn causes the ECM to adjust the air mixture. Hotter the air, the leaner the ECM makes the mixture. Why is this? Hotter air has less burnable molecules of oxygen (yes oxygen is very flamable in it's purest form) due to the natural expansion of the gas called "air". The resistor mod told the sensor that the hot air coming in from between the cylinders was actually a little cooler and as such sent more fuel to the throttle bodies which makes for a cooler running and hopefully better running Nomad. Minus the resistor what else could we do to get cooler air to pass over the air temp sensor? Where is the sensor located again? Underneath the right side cover away from fresh outside air. When one uses a big air kit and installs it what happens? You've eliminated the right side cover and exposed the air temp sensor to air that is no longer coming from the left side of the bike and heated by the crossover tube running between the cylinders! The air temp sensor is getting its signal from air coming straight at it from the right side and it's much cooler air. This, in turn, tells the ECM to send more fuel. Some aftermarket air kits totally expose that air temp sensor and some are more covered up either by the custom design cover or the location of the filter underneath. The point is, its possible that the ECM is compensating for the cooler air hitting the sensor now and correcting the air/fuel mixture. How far can it go in it's compensation? Not sure. I don't know the parameters of the ECM. Remember there are more than just the air temp sensor. There is air pressure sensors that compensate when you go up into the mountains and a coolant sensor as well. Go forth and share the knowledge.....

Thanks BD, coupons will be in the mail. You are right, we should have figured this out ourselves. I just did not put the air temp sensor together with increased air flows. DUH!! There is one rule of thumb shot to h*ll. Never again will I tell someone that they need a new ECM with both BAK and new pipes.

Trust me Idaho, once this stuff gets in your head it will clutter up the really important stuff and you'll feel like a bozo like me! I need to learn to shut up sometimes.

Don't you dare shut up. That is what my monthly payments to Trip are for, to help pay your salary. Wife does not mind only going to the grocery store once a month. Says we need to go on a diet anyway. I am making a sacrifice for you man. Keep up the good work!

I recently posted to ask about after market pipes and a fuel injection controller. I was not getting the mileage that stock bikes were getting. I disconnected the fuel injection controller. Mileage seems to be up
