for what it's worth
I too have heard that they attract more deer than they repel... A buddy of mine never had any problems w/ deer till he put them on his truck. I myself, have never had them and never will.

Deer Warning devices

After close friends of ours hit a deer on their motorcycle my wife insisted on getting a pair. I don't believe they work but if it gives her peace of mind that's OK.

I stuck them under the lower triple tree where you can't notice them too much.

Maybe your buddy installed them backwards, so they attract rather than repel the deer?

Deer Warning devices

Heres my take on these things.....
I have never had those "whistles on a vehicle of any sort. I do believe they can hear them ....possibly, but when I've seen deer, they have usually been standing along side of the road somewhere. And they usually continue standing as I pass by {slowed down}. The last thing I want to do is to "spook" them and get the "stand of deer" running in what could be all directions.
I was hit by a deer a few yrs. back :'( and in my case my buddy was riding ahead of me. I believe the deer waited until he had passed by, {we were less than a 1/4 mile apart } and then made the mad dash up the bank, and across the road right when I approached. She took 3-4 steps beside me and then figured she could "cut across". Wrong !! and down we went. This happened on the Queen Charlotte Islands where there are literally hundreds of deer in a relatively small square mile area. I saw many of these large stands the day we were hit and although we were hit without those whistles I still won't put them on my bike or car.
I saw a sign once that has stuck with me. It was hung on a car that was crushed with a giant log on top of it.
It read: Expect the unexpected.
Still the best thing to do with deer and everything else I think.

Former neighbor owned a body shop and fixed lots of vehicles from deer strikes with the whistles on them.

I really don't know how many deer that I have killed that was trotting through the timber and stopped in it's tracks when I whistled. That is why I won't put them on my bike. I believe if they hear it they will stop to see where the noise is coming from and splat.

A whistle will never replace a good set of eyes.

Deer Warning devices

The one time I had these devices on a vehical they were on it when I bought it. Shortly there after I saw a 12 point buck. I know it was because i aimed the lights on the van at it. My first take was it was a joke x-mass ornament, someone put on the roadside. This was a monster deer, and I have never ever seen one before or since that size..

I sat there laffing out loud, and then it split, which was the first time I came to know it was ALIVE. I hate when that happens!

I wonder if I should start a thread debating how to count points--East Coast style or West Coast style. Just kidding. Mac, that must have been one beauty of a buck.

My wife Pat and I have a tote board for deer hit by our cars. 3 for me and 2 for Pat in the last 5 yrs. And I got a sparrow a couple of weeks ago with the bike. We had whistles on the vehicles on more than one occasion and it obviously didn't help. Running low on venison now though. We're due. Hope it's with the car or truck.

I have better luck with the vehicles than with my hunting expeditions.

Let me tell you that in all cases between my wife and myself, where there is a thick tree line or brush near the road you just have to pray the timing is there so that you miss. When they're on a run, you can blink your eyes and it's there and it always seems they're on a run.

I had a mule deer doe standing in the middle of the road, by devils tower in august. i was still 75-100 yards from her, when i hit my stebel horn. I think she is still running !!!! dont have much faith in deer whistles, but my stebel definately grabs their attention!

Thanks for all the responses, and as usual for the laughs. Seems the odds are just as likely that I will attract deer as warn them ::)

Cheap deer warning devices going back to Wally World tomorrow.

Maybe I'll look into mounting a little .22 rifle on the front somehow.. that might deter them more

Brian
