How have you mounted a CB antenna?

Hey Robert, that looks like a nice clean install. Do you get good range with that setup and have you checked the SWR with a meter?

When I first installed it, I cut the antenna too short. Didn't check the SWR....sounded "tinny" so my compadres would tell me.

So, I went back to Radio Shack and bought a new stainless steel rod and cut it according to SWR readings. The J&M CB I use has a High and Low power setting. It works like a charm now. I get very good range, transmitting and receiving.

BTW, the black cover you see right above the load spring is an old lead/unleaded gas converter, upside down. Helps in the wear and tear of the antenna. That's the only thing you won't find at Radio Shack...LOL.

How can you guys hear the CB at road speed?? Do you have a hands free setup. Tomk and I have been discussing this and are trying to figure out a good communication setup.

BD, right now I have a Chatterbox on the Nomad and it has two radio channels to communicate with other radios. I have a full face helmet with a VOX mic installed. All I have to do is adjust the squelch and have been able to talk to other people with no problem. Comes through nice and clear. Only thing is people with FRS radios are fairly rare, that is why I want to upgrade to a J&M setup. From what I can tell from my research the J&M probably has better audio quality anyway.

Idaho is right, BD.........I researched the FRS vs CB issue years ago. Came to the conclusion that CB has much better range and everyone uses it.

The right quality equipment is the key. A J&M CB with proper helmet setup along with a Garmin Zumo GPS just can't be beat. They work together so well for CB communication, MP3 playing, Bluetooth and XM radio.

The only caveat is the price.....the J&M complete setup is going to cost you just over 500.00 dollars. The Garmin Zumo runs about 500-600 dollars.

However, I wouldn't trade them for the world on rides and long trips.

I guess I'm confused on how you have the CB set up with your helmet so you can hear it and transmit with your hands on the bars? I've got the old fashioned CB and hand held mic and speaker in the door in my head and was wondering how you got yours to work with a motorcycle

I honestly didn't think people still used CB radios. I thought they might have joined Pong and Pop Rocks as relics of the 70's. Shows how much I know.

Now I want one.

BD, I have a J&M helmet setup in my helmet as McDaddy suggests, but also the PTT for the J&M is right next to your left hand on the grip. Take a look at my above pic and you'll see.

How have you mounted a CB antenna?

I used to have my antenna (J&M universal 3-ft) mounted at the license plate, but now have it mounted under and behind the trunk. Trip's install looks good and clean, if you still have the sissy bar.
