So I got the fuel processor installed and took the bike for a spin, since the tank was nearly empty my first stop was the gas station, where I filled it with 89 (midgrade) octane. I usually would buy 91 octane because of the pinging. Temps around 100 and 30% humidity. I decided to ride over to the Bass Pro Shop, so I hit the freeway and got the engine good and warm. High speed roll-ons in 5th: no noticeable pinging. 30 miles of 65+ on the freeway and I was at BPS. Spent 30 minutes in the store, took surface streets back home, bike was really hot and had some minor pinging, but not nearly as bad as before the Cobra unit. First impression - bike seems "peppier", has more zip when you crank the wrist.

Got back home, re-read the instructions and found that the unit comes tuned for the 1600 Classic, and it had to be tweaked slightly for the Nomad. Set the pots to 3-5-0 (per Cobra's instructions) and I'll take it out later and see what happens.

It was cool (80!) and overcast this morning, so I decided to take advantage of the situation and go on a long ride. I went W to Gila Bend, then to Casa Grande, then home, a total of about 150 miles. About 35 of those miles were on I-8 at 75-80MPH. my fuel economy tanked on that section to 30 MPG, which was after my fill-up in Gila Bend. On the tank I had prior to that (post Cobra FI2000R), I got 35.6 MPG. BTW, that 30 MPG was the worst mileage I've ever recorded since I started keeping track of my mileage.

Bike ran like a top, I think the Cobra unit was a good decision. I filled up with regular (87), so I'll see if it pings on the lower octane juice.

I think 3 is a little high for the first pot, and that is killing your fuel economy. I'd turn it down a lot even if you must increase the 2nd pot a bit to prevent pinging.

Mine is definately different, but I always run the 1st pot lower and the 2nd pot higher than you are.

I think so too, and about what is the elevation where you are?

I'm at about 1200 feet here.

Yeah, my fuel economy has definitely gone in the crapper. I'm only getting around 30mpg. Like I said the 3-5-0 was Cobra's default setting for the 1600 Nomad. I'm game to try whatever adjustment you guys want to recommend.

Out around Gila Bend (50 miles W), it's 753 feet, close enough.

If that first pot's on 3 I'd turn it down to 1 & see what happens. The thing is that at cruise you probably won't need much enrichment if it cruised OK before. Ride it gently, & if it surges under a light steady throttle, then turn it back up just a smidgen.

Mostly you need to be interested in the 2nd pot and how it affects pinging. Only crank it up until the pinging goes away under acceleration.

If you find yourself cranking it waaay up to avoid pinging at WOT, then maybe 87 octane isn't quite enough.

In truth, your elevation shouldn't have much effect on the mixture or the adjustments you'll be making. The stock computer adjusts for that, and all the Cobra does is add proportionally to whatever the computer is already doing.

I rode the freeway home this evening, and I noticed at a steady 60-65, it almost felt like it was surging. I'm not sure if that's the right term, it did feel a little odd, though.

Do you still have the ICS hooked up and functional? They might be kicking in and out at light cruise settings.

ICS? The solenoids? Yeah, I haven't messed with them, they are still intact.

what did you turn the 1st pot down to? If you did then your not adding any additional fuel and it should cruise that same as before at 65. I know tomk has your setup, Cobra, with the open right side air cleaner and is running about 1.5 on the first pot. Not sure where his second one is set. He gets no pinging and got the same mileage as me going to Mesquite. About 40.

Yeah, right now I have pot1 turned down to 1.5-2.0 and pot2 turned up to about 5.5 I'm going to leave it there and ride it for a few days. Hey, gas is below $4 a gallon here now, I can afford to splurge.
