I'd say most of them do. I could never get mine to completely stop pinging, especially in the summer.

Mine doesn't ping 99% of the time. It is only on the hottest of days that I hear pinging and I run 85 octane here. We do have the benefit of altitude for that. I carry a small bottle of octane boost for those ocassions.

As far as changing octane, try the midgrade and if that still pings then move to the next higher octane. Run as low of octane as possible without pinging. If you run too high of octane, you will have carbon build up in the cylinders. Do not run avgas. That stuff is really high octane and meant for high compression engines.

I would be interested to know more about the bottle of Octane boost, what brand? where do you get it? how much you put in?
What is avgas?

I use seafoam from time to time, but this is for keeping the injectors clean, I dont
think it boosts the octane?

Just pick it up at Walmart. It's Gumout Octane Booster. I only put in an ounce when I notice pinging.

Avgas is Aviation fuel. That is very high octane and meant for a high compression engine.

Avgas is 100LL. It is leaded, but low lead.

I have seen some avgas out here that is 105 octane. Just way to high for most engines.

I kept my 08 Nomad stock and used Chevron 94 octane whenever I can. It pinged only on hard acceleration and high gear.

My gas mileage wasn't good on lower grade fuels and I didn't like ethanol so I figured the 94 octane was optimal for me.

Said I should be using high test gas.
I cant notice it, is my hearing that bad? what did you say? huh? what?

Also said to find a gas pump with a dedicated high test hose, not one with all three reg, mid, high, together, as when they are together you may still be getting regular even when it says 92 octane!

So with that said, I will be using high test from now on.
I tried running Regular several times in my 1500. It always started to ping after the 2nd or so tank, and I always went back to premium. I tried it in my Nomad, same result. I'm sticking with Premium.

If you don't do anything to correct the lean air/fuel ratio as it comes from Ma Kaw, in most cases you're not going to be able to run regular octane.

An engine with a compression ratio in the 9.x to 1 range should never require premium fuel, IF the air/fuel ratio is correct.

Even the Smart car requires premium fuel, and it's supposed to be an economy car.

You can thank the government emission standards.

You can buy 100 LL at almost any airport. Little one's too. Most general aviation aircraft engines use 100 LL.

I am thinking about riding over there and trying this out.

I have seen more and more places with signs for selling ethanol free gas.
Is this a sign of the future?
Ethanol has gotta be one of the govts biggest boondoggles they ever came up with!
Here is a list of Ethanol-Free gas stations in Florida, in case you want to give them a try:

Thanks very much for that list of ethanol free gas stations!
I see many of them are Gate and Sunoco.

You know the more I think about this, the more I think that the ethanol is causing many problems, including pinging.
I put some mid grade in today 90 octane along with a small splash of Seafoam, and it does seem to have more "spunk"!
I will surely be looking out for the ethanol free places now.

Here is an interesting link http://www.fuel-testers.com/gasoline...hanol_E10.html

Of course they are trying to sell something, but most of what they say is what I have heard about ethanol and it's effect on gas. Interesting it says that ethanol is used in octane boosters, so if you are trying to avoid gas stations with ethanol and using that stuff you are going in circles IMO.
