If you are just checking them be certain that you set the bearing and spring below the set screw before screwing the cap back on. otherwise you run the risk of threading the large spring inside the bearing. Ask me how I know.

I got the following message from the guy that work on my Nomad. It has just over 25,000 miles on it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Bill,

I got the rear cam chain tension adjuster measured at 0.233". Getting to the front one involves removing the tank and the carb bank to get the air cross over tube (between the air filter and the 'fake air filter) out of the way. In the documentation for the spacers, it says anything over 1/8" is time to add the spacers. So I am going to make some assumptions. 1.) they are both prob stretched about the same. 2.) You are going to say lets go ahead and do it. 3) you don't want to pay me to take the tank and stuff off twice. So, I didn't actually pull the front tension adjuster. Go ahead and order them, and let me know when they come in... I have plenty of work left to keep me going till they get here I'm sure.

I didn't have to remove the fuel tank or crossover tube to do the left side or frt. cyl.. It's a little tight between the two cyl's but nothing that can't be done. You will want to remove the left air cleaner though. The right side is a "walk in the park".
Good luck

Cam Chain Tensioner Extenders.

This may have been answered some where already but I can't find it.

Is it necessary to make certain that the cylinders are at TDC when doing the tensioner extension install? Or can you just do the job by having the bike on a floor jack and in nuetral so the engine is less likely to turn? Even the service manual doesn't mention that for removing and installing the tensioners.

Also, does anyone know if it voids the warranty? I have already gotten the extenders from Chuckster, and have a dealer or another bike service place that says they can do the job, but haven't before. I would love to tackle the job myself but am still leary about some of the "make sure..." and "watch out for..." tips from other posts.

Most of us have installed the extenders by just leaving the motor still and not moving it, however the best way is to put each cylinder on TDC so the valves are all closed and there is no valve spring tension on the cam and chain. Do one cylinder and then put the other one on TDC and you will have no problems.
It shouldn't effect your warranty, the extenders are a dealer item here in Canada.

What is the easiest method to get them TDC? I hear that you can take out one plug on each jug and put a paper towel or something light in the hole, then bump the starter; when it blows out, your there. Is that correct or is there a better way? Only asking cause I don't know.

:)

Thats a good way, when the paper blows out the valves are shut and the piston is at the top.
