Severe storms again

Gene had mentioned in one of his recent post that he had a new part time thing going on. That he wouldn't be on very much, and then not until afternoon time. Hope that is the case.

Like Scott, my wife thinks I'm nuts to ride to and through that area.
Is this relatively normal to have tornadoes at all, in this area? I always thought they came up through Texas and hit more of the south. I understand the number of tornadoes is a huge surprise. What is the usual weather for the area this time of yr. and what can we expect for June? I have a feeling that when the day comes that I ride off for the rally, that "judygirl" will be none too happy, and maybe even mad at me for going. Even if the tornadoes do stop. The only good thing is that she doesn't watch the news and it's me who made her aware of what's going on to begin with. I'll have to keep my mouth shut from here on in.

It's unlike Gene to stay away from here for an extended time. I hope you're right, Mitch.

Relax...I've lived in tornado country for 50 years and I've never seen one.
It was 15 yrs ago April 19 that Ft. Smith and Van Buren got hit by a F2.
Although tornadoes can occur in the summer and fall, they are usually associated with spring storms.
What has been odd about these recent storms is there slow pace.
Usually a big storm will build up, blow in, then weaken.
We've had tornado warnings 3 days in a row.

Like everyone else my thoughts are with the folks in the southeast
and especially our members.

They can occur anywhere. I lived in Salt Lake City for 39 years. We were always told that we were "tornado proof" because we were surrounded by 9,000-11,000' mountains. Well a tornado went through downtown SLC on August 11, 1999 killing one man and causing nearly $200 million in damage. The wind embedded pieces of glass in the concrete walls of the Delta Center.

I'm not overly concerned about the trip to NC. I am planning on hitting rain and thunderstorms, but the chance of encountering a tornado is very, very slim.

Tornadoes as far south as I live are quite rare and those that we do have are usually in the EF1 category. It's the occasional hurricane that bothers us the most. I was watching a New Orleans meteorologist this afternoon and he said that this could be an EF5 that traveled a straight 400 mile journey from western Mississippi to NW Georgia over 1 mile wide. That is a tremendous storm that may break the death toll record of 318 back in 1974.

Were not in a tornado prone area here, but there have been a few closeby over the years. About three years ago I was riding home on the bike when one went by just over a 1/4 mile away, everything around me started going sideways and the wind blew me and the bike across the road. Within about 30 seconds it went by.

We didn't have any problems here in my area, but 40 miles from here got hit hard.
Lake Burton is lined with million dollar homes and a crap load got totally destroyed!! They are showing pictures of the damage on the news right now.
Bartow county lost over a hundred homes, totally destroyed!
Looks like I lucked out!!

Actually we have had a few - remember the one that went through Barrie - it was a baddie. Also this past weekend one came down at Plattsville about 30klm form me. We had 60 mph winds here yesterday.

But thank God they are far and few between and nothing like they get down south. I just hope everyone is safe and sound.

Severe storms again

On my way north on I-39 in northern Illinois yesterday late afternoon I saw a convoy at least five-miles long of utility vehicles heading south.

It was an impressive sight. They were hauling just about every piece of equipment you could think of. I am assuming they are headed to Alabama or similar areas where the destruction occurred to help restore power.

We had a powerful tornado here last fall that torn-down the big power towers over a large area. Watching these guys work 24/7 to rebuild these towers was impressive. Quite an operation. They had these things rebuilt and operating within a couple weeks.

I really hope no one here was hurt.

My hubbies sister lives in Mississippi....they lost their house. She was not home when the tornado hit but her husband was. They had to dig him out of the ruble. Went to hospital....no broken bones...stiches and lots of bruises. :'(

Have a son that lives in Ga....damage on towns all around him...within 3-4 miles of him...but missed them.
