Regular Gas

I was running Cobras and a Power Comander FP (in the Puget sound) and tried all 3 fuel grades. Still got some popping on hard deceleratin but no pinging. I added Joe "Chuckster" Noris' single plate intake and now run stronger than ever, on regular (87), with no odd noises.
It may just be my opinion, but I think the exhaust sounds better after the intake mod too. =D

i have cobra pipes and fuel processor and only burn regular gas.. i don't lug the engine or run it hard. i'm sure if i really tried i could get it to ping. with the low compression of this engine and the more reasonable richer mixture you are running there should be no problems. two of the things that makes this engine ping is the dual plugs which create a faster flame front from two directions, and the ultra lean programing for pollution regulations.

Cactusjack is spot-on. Some bikes are more susceptible to ping than others, and it also depends on riding style. Don't lug the Nomad like an HD - these things like to be rev'd.
Gotta agree with Taranis and Cactusjack. Also what Blowndodge said about mileage too.

I think the open intake by Chuckster makes a huge difference on pinging. And the open intake gives my 1600 a power surge. :) I am running regular now with debaffled pipes and TFI. Will probably use mid grade or premium in the Texas summer heat.

Regular Gas

There is a big todo here in Germany regarding Super unleaded gas (95). Just recently the Super was converted to 10% ethanol blend, called E10 here and everyone is up in arms. As this is being discussed in the media, it turns out that a number of countries have been using this mixture for quite a while, the U.S. being one of the countries. Of course, I asked my dealer about using the E10 fuel and for the moment he recommends that I use Super Plus which is a higher octane (98) but no ethanol added. My question is a) is the 90/10% fuel widely used in the US to your knowledge and b) if yes, have you experienced any problems with your Nomad and this mixture?

Ride safe

All of the gas pumps in my part of the country have a sign that says "This motor fuel may contain up to 10% ethanol." It isn't officially designated as E-10, to my knowledge.

I don't think we have any E-85 in AZ (15% ethanol), at least I've never seen any.

My location is like Scott's in Arizona. Up to 10% ethanol is posted on the pump. E-85 is also available locally in the greater areas. I have not experienced any problems with ethanol fuel, however I treat all fuel, in anything with a motor, with MMO at the recommended rate. Additionally my bike is rarely idle for several days in a row. The bike that sits is treated with MMO and Sta-bil for ethanol.
