Bike just quit...

I suspect sidestand. I have put my side stand down then realized I needed to pull forward a few inches...bike dies. First time it happened I was stumped.

I didn't think to mention that part to a Nomad owner
No problem.. ......... I stopped one time to help a stranded HD rider, when I was ready to leave, I turned the switch on, hit the start button........ and nothing. Checked the kill switch.... OK, and then realized (I had been talking to the other rider) that my stand was down. I would have had a bad day if I had been on a HD, because I would have fired it up and started down the road with the stand down. :'(

Thanks for clearing that up. Must be on the newer models though. My friend with an '07 FLHTC hit his start button while standing beside his bike, and it started and ran into the door of his pick-up doing pretty good damage to the truck, and put a few scratches on his bike. I'd hate to explain that one to my insurance company. ??? But the bike not starting with the stand down, to me anyway, is a very important safety feature. ;)

Safety features are great, sometimes I forget about the switches. I get flustered, until I remember. Then all is well again.

Bike just quit...

A guy I use to ride with Many years ago when I first got my first bike, use to go around and switch the kill switch on his buddies bikes. Then sit there at the coffee shop and laugh at them when they couldn't get it going infront of a whole group of people. F'er!!! He even stopped at a light next to someone, reached over and did the same thing. Then rode off quick to try and loose them just to be a dick!!!

We got him back. Turned his kill switch ON, put his bike in 2nd gear, and turned on his flasher (not self cancelling) and pegged his horn button. He turned the key, horn went off, till he figured out how to stop it. Then tried to start nothing, no neutral light, got that figured out and the turn signal off and THEN after a few more tries figured out the kill switch.
After that he never did that again. Oh and it was all at the coffee shop full of riders and a few girls he was interested in.
He learned his lesson that day
Ever since that, I NORMALLY think of that when I start my bike when out with others or where my bike has been left out of site for any length of time ;)

My 99 will start with the side stand down if it is in neutral clutch in or out. In gear if the clutch is pulled in. Let the clutch out in gear with the stand down and it dies.

Well it has been a week now, and all is well. Still do not know why it died...only thinking maybe for some unforseen reason I bumped the stand with my foot, as I was pulling into my driveway. Killed it then not hinking of what happened saw oil pressure light on and PANIC....
Thanks for all the support and stories....maybe It will help me in the future.

I've had a similar situation. Once after refueling, once first starting for a ride, then once shutting off at an intersection to talk (out in the country), the starter would run but the engine simply wouldn't catch. After sitting for a couple minutes, it started right up. Then, one day, cruising down the road, it simply stopped running. I checked the fuel cock and all other things, but I couldn't get it to fire up....then I shut off the key and back on again. It started right up. I think this happened one more time since I figured out the key off/ key on trick. It hasn't happened since for about 8 months. Don't know what it was / is. The important note here, is the starter engages and turns, the engine doesn't ignite. So that rules out the stand, neutral kill, drop switches, etc.

My bike does that sometimes as well, In my case I know its a worn ignition switch, If I don't hear the fuel pump turn on I just turn the key on and off a couple times until it does.
Its probably the same problem in your case as well.

It does have a cdi ignition control box and a fuel pump but it is not in the tank like on the FI models. But I agree with Steve that it is probably in the switch itself.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind. I'll also have to listen for the pump cause I can't hear it once those V&H pipes start up.
