Marine radio or not for fairing?

I was lucky enough to get the marine Alpine IDA-X100M in my fairing when I bought my fairing.

Here's a good look at it if you're buying, or just curious.

Marine radio or not for fairing?

yeh, 10/4, I have a Zune, which isnt a hard drive. I had that last problem with my I-pod that was H/D. It would lock up from the shake on the handle bars

I may go with one with the USB port now, time for more research !

Thanks guys for the help. After spending countless hours reviewing all the choices, I finalley gave in and bought this one :

I'm going to take Ringadinghs advise, and just leave it out there, see what happens !

My two previous stereos were Pioneer units, and they stood up ok in the fairing. I think youll be satisfied with it.

Marine radio or not for fairing?

I didn't get a Marine radio for mine, due to 2 problems. 1. They are water resistant, not proof and with a splash cover any radio should be fine.
2. Didn't have the features I wanted in any marine radio I could afford and the ones that did were pricey.
I have a car radio in mine. It has USB, Aux port and SD card slot on the front and detachable face place (can store it away out of sight and less likelihood if anyone would try to steal it). Also has remote control. This one doesn't but another model has bluetooth in the same series, which I don't really need on a bike. Besides my GPS has bluetooth built in.
Also it has decent wattage output without using an amp. May change if I add rear speaker pods if I change to a HD tourpak down the road

I did put in marine speakers and the sound from them is decent. I can hear the stereo at highway speeds albeit close to full volume. More wattage would solve that, but may overdrive the speakers, again balance is key. I too didn't like the rear mounted USB cable as it would have to be rigged somehow out the front and another hole and something else to have to cover if it rained.

I do know a few boating friends that have a splash cover and don't have marine radio's and have used them that way for years with no problems, and they run them in rain in derby's etc. I've never found a radio (car/boat) that is waterproof? not that wasn't very expensive.

I don't even have a splash cover, and Ive ridden in every type of weather imaginable from a tornado to a snowstorm.

Perfect guys, I appreciate it. I really didn't want to add a splash cover, cause then you cant see the screen & songs

Another nice feature this radio has, is tagging. If I'm riding and hear a song I like, I can tag it to download it in the future.

The faring comes back from paint sometime this week or so, so I'll be ready to go

BTW, most phones have blue tooth in them, and the only difference is, instead of the radio turning down the volume, you have to do it to take the call....... but the call still rings in the earpiece

My radio cover slides down when I want to close it and stays up the rest of the time. So I can see the screen fine, in daylight or nightime. It is smoked, but at night can see through it even with the plastic protective film still on the cover. It also makes the radio more stable as it mounts the stereo to it's sleeve. I then just mounted the metal bracket at the rear of the radio for more stability.
I like the tagging feature you mentioned, I also have to add an amplified antenna to mine. It does also play MP3 files from a CDRW so lots of options for play back.

Got myself a Sony car radio for 130$. What's special, I thought anyway, it has a tray for an i-pod (holds my i-phone) that hides behind the face plate w/usb connection and the display shows what's playing on the i-pod.. Just have to install it in the fairng between work, university and work..... It will be at the National.... :)

What model Sony did you get Sylvain? I didn't know they had one to hold an Ipod. Sounds cool.

Try here Tom for $110. Although I can't vouch one way or the other about the store.
