My advice is stop reading, just read the first part about how to take them off. Save reading the rest until you have it off and have them in front of you. As soon as you see the parts you will go 'doh, that is easy'.

And do the right side first. The left is smaller quarters and a little annoying to get the allen wrench in there...so do the easy side first. It really is a simple task. It is just more scary (at least for me) since it involves internal engine parts.

I did mine this last fall and the one on the left side of the bike (front cylinder) may teach you a few new words. Remember it will come out but it can be a very frustrating trying to find the magic spot. Once that spot and twist position is found it will practically fall out. Make sure you loosen all the breather apparatus and try to get it moved out of the way as much as possible. Either get a couple of new gaskets (which I recommend) or a tube of permatex gasket sealer for the reinstall.

Thanks for all the input. Guess I got at least one more season before I really need to check into them.

here's a quick question, do you have to replace both at the same time?

If one needs replacing, the other will also. I wouldn't replace just one besides in an unheard of instance where one would be out of travel and the other would be fully extended. I also wouldn't replace them until the push rods are nearly out of travel. If they are replaced with plenty of travel left on the rods it will put undue stress on the chains resulting in excessive chain stretch when the assemblies are tightened against the cylinders.

Sometimes you get a bit of oil coming out when the cap is removed, make sure the O ring is in good shape and there is nothing to worry about.

The cap on the rear cylinder extender assembly will always have some oil in it due to leaning towards the cap. Nothing unusual there.

The ratchet mechanism on the will keep the rod from backing out. If you aren't going to put the caps back on, which I wouldn't until the assembly is pulled and reset, I would cover each with a rag to keep dust and grime out of them.
