I don't undestand why BD. You no doubt have seen a bench mounted meat grinder, and for moose you are supposed to use a snow blower. It's the same thing just bigger.

a 444 seems like a very large motor for a snowblower.bet it really
burns thru a lot of fuel. ![]()

I hand load 265 grain Hornady @2300. Shoots under 1" at 100 yds for five shot groups. I can't complain.

.308 is plenty for a moose. You don't stand back at 100 yards to bang away at moose you can just about walk up to one if you do it right.
If yer smart about it, you in behind the moose and walk up so maybe it goes to a place easier to get it out. I have had them come to me when I was just paper punchin, and have them get right between me and the paper. Tawk about upsetting. You guys got any ideer how hard it is to shoot under a moose at paper right between it legs? serious!

Practice makes perfect Mac. When I hunted, I liked to go to the range at least once a month year round to be totally comfortable and familiar with my rifles. It's the only way I felt certain that when I pulled the trigger I knew precisely where it was going. SO, it doesn't matter if it is 25 yards or 200 yards, I know I could put it exactly where I wanted to. With the .30-06, I could extend that a lot more.
The closest I have gotten to a moose was 25'. It was walking across Rt 201 north of Jackman ME and we pulled over to look at it. I got out and walked up to that distance and looked at it eye to eye, and I was just under 6 and a half feet at that time. It was a young male. After what seemed an eternity, it walked away. Quote:

You could have got closer than that. But it isn't a very wise thing to do. I have been at 1/2 that distance taking pictures which i runined not having my old 35mm Minolta set correctly. I got pictures have jet black and half moose.
I should think i could kill a moose with a 22 pistol with out a lot of troubles. They are not like hunting deer. The deal is for me I would have no way to move it after i took it, so I would have to live at the site , and do the skinning and smoking of the meat then and there. Jackman is a lot like right here. You can't see any 200 yards in Jackman, and unless you are on a logging road you can't see any 200 yards here. The hunt is based on finding a moose, not the killing. And when you do, not spooking it, but driving it to a easy place to get the chore of moving it done. Bears are bad, but not near as bad as a moose. I learn these things the hard way. Took a bear up in the mountians alone, and that dead bear just about killed me for the getting it off the mountian. It just rolled from one tree where i pried it loose to the next tree. You can be sure i won't try that stunt again anytime soon. This is the last 1/4er of the race track in spring right out back. I was collectin' sap. This is just a little guy of course, and he ain't too sure what he's lookin at. ![]() ![]()

Oh yeah, Now if i had the permit and it was all legal, I would have backed up a lot, and gone around, and drove that moose to the door, and shot it right there, all handy.

Most of my hunting was done in the catskills and some in the lower adirondacks. My hunting in Maine was limited to a .22 and small game. A moose permit is hard to get.

I was away duck hunting three weeks ago and I wasn't at my spot two minutes before a big bull cam out of the bush to the swamp. I called it and it came a lot closer. I had my fifteen year old son with me and it was the first time he had seen one in the bush. We'll see what happens in a couple weeks when the season opens. Heres a pic I took.

Hey Ring that's not a duck!
![]() I might be able to get you some moose feathers though. The warden might not be able to tell the difference. .................................................. ................... Yeah getting moose tags isn't easy, and when you do it's never some place close by.

We are fortunate to have received a cow tag this year, with any luck we'll get a cow and a calf and put some meat in the freezer.
I had my 308 in to the gunsmith and he got it all working good. There was a recall on the firing pin and I had him adjust the gas cylinder, as it sometimes jammed on me. I shot it while duck hunting and I put 8 shots within 1 1/2" of the bullseye, all a bit left and low. Thats close enough for anything I'll be aiming at. The picture is of my son trying my Winchester for the very first time. He did pretty good for a lefty, all three shots hit the target in a 2" group.

.308 is an inherently accurate cartridge and works well for most any north american game. I was in Scheels the other day and I was looking at all the new rifles and stuff that's come out. All these short magnums and high tech looking stuff. Even the muzzle loaders look high tech. I like the old fashioned stuff. Marlin has a cowboy version of their 45-70 with a 26" octagon barrel. I might like that and as far as the muzzle guns go, the percussion cap looked pretty to me. I did like the .450 Marlin with the 18" barrel in stainless. That is a good brush gun. It's all fun though to window shop.

Window shopping is always fun, Im looking for a 12ga that comes with a rifled barrel for deer and a barrel that can handle steel shot for ducks. I have to do some more research but a Mossberg 500 may fit the bill. Im not sure how good a gun they are compared to some of the other brands out there.
